The reason this guy got away with this for so long is that he was simply buying off people to look the other way. Those people sold out in hopes that Stanford would hire them once they left the regulatory agency. Sweet deal for everyone except Stanford’s customers who assumed, since the regulators were quiet, that everything was A-OK.

This is pure politics, plain and simple: put it off for as long as possible and then, maybe it will disappear altogether. Or at least until after the next election when the landscape could be altered significantly – in favor of the banks.

O the temptation! This article could have turned into a screed criticizing the Times’ far-left editorial slant and showing that to be the primary cause of their diminishment. But I was a good boy and concentrated only on the numbers, which are bad enough all by themselves!
