Wright Wins GOP Nomination to HD 54

Fruita Policeman and one-time Republican Party activist Jared Wright overwhelmingly won the GOP nomination to HD 54, the seat currently held by Laura Bradford, who anounced earlier that she would not seek re-election. No Democrat has yet stepped up to challenge for the seat.

Sources close to State House Rep. Laura Bradford say the beleaguered western slope lawmaker will announce later today that she will not seek re-election to House District 54. Republicans Jared Wright and John Price will seek the nomination at the HD 54 Assembly this Saturday.

All three candidates running for House District 54, the seat currently held by the embattled Laura Bradford, spoke to over 300 delegates at the Mesa County Republican Convention on Saturday March 24th in Grand Junction. It was the first time that Bradford and the two Republicans challenging her for the seat appeared on the same stage.

Beginning around a month ago with a simple traffic stop involving Rep. Laura Bradford (R-Collbran) that quickly became a political story of Pandora-esqe calibre, Mesa County’s two house districts have been the ones watch, (if only with furtive sideways glances, so as not to betray any actual concern that something of import may occur on the forbidding side of the Eisenhower tunnel.) Speculation that someone would emerge to challenge her for the seat ended officially March 1st, when John “Rusty” Price filed his candidacy with the Secretary of State’s office. Meanwhile, Mesa County’s other State House seat, 55, came to life this past week with the announcement last Monday by Democrat trial lawyer Dan Robinson that he would challenge GOP incumbent Ray Scott this fall.
