Showdown in the Governor’s Race
by admin | 7:15 am, July 24, 2010
On Thursday, former Congressman Tom Tancredo threw down the gauntlet. His demands? Both GOP gubernatorial candidates, Dan Maes and Scott McInnis, must bow out of the governor’s race by high noon on Monday, July 26th and replace the GOP nominee (with himself?). If the GOP candidates do not meet his demands, he will usurp the [...]

Tom Tancredo May Run For Governor
by admin | 9:04 pm, November 9, 2009
As Josh Penry prepares to suspend his campaign for Governor, former Congressman Tom Tancredo may be preparing to deny Scott McInnis a clear path to the nomination.
This would not be a move without precedent. Tom Tancredo’s gubernatorial intentions were made clear in the months following the 2008 elections when he told Republican insiders and organizations that he was planning to run for Governor. Those plans fell by the wayside in 2009 when Josh Penry began to consolidate support from conservative activists.
More recently, Tom Tancredo was reported to be on the verge of challenging Jane Norton for the Republican Senate nomination had Norton found herself the lone contender in that race.
Schultheis Retiring, Lambert May Run For Seat
by admin | 11:35 am, November 5, 2009
Sen. Dave Schultheis recently announced that he would not be seeking re-election to SD-9 in 2010. As Ben DeGrow reports, conservative Rep. Kent Lambert may be announcing his candidacy for the seat later today.
Lambert will be the de facto nominee if he declares his candidacy. While Schultheis was facing a primary opponent in Tom McDowell who will likely continue to run, McDowell has proven time and time again that he does not have the temperament for public office and has demonstrated a propensity for making ludicrous statements that is at least as strong as the outgoing Schultheis.
McDowell has predicated his candidacy on expanding the big tent of the Republican party and has put that goal into practice by:
- Randomly accusing center-right bloggers of being "social conservatives" trying to drag down the party, usually levelling the charge at blogs that rarely or never discuss social issues.
- Libelling several Republican campaign operatives for no apparent reason.
- Throwing an odd tantrum at a conservative commentator for "name-calling" Mark Udall.
- Railing at activists about "social conservative" conspiracies.
- Constantly deriding primaries as damaging to the party; before declaring himself a primary candidate against an incumbent legislator.

Not Evil Just Wrong Debate
Thank McInnis and Norton for “Repeal TABOR” Headlines
by admin | 8:00 am, September 26, 2009
Some of you waking up the other day may have greeted by the surprising news in some newspapers that a "GOP poll" found that a majority of Coloradoans (and a sizable chunk of Republicans) supposedly want to repeal TABOR. Take this article in the Denver Business Journal for instance:
And a majority thinks that the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), which requires tax increases to be approved by voters, should be repealed. Statewide, 41 percent of voters surveyed say Colorado is headed in the right direction, while 48 percent say it’s going the wrong way. But in Denver, 53 percent say the state is heading the right way.
Only 15 percent of Republicans believe the state is headed in the right direction, the poll found, while 64 percent of Democrats feel that way and 44 percent of independents do.
As for TABOR, which opponents blame for hamstringing the state budget and supporters say keeps a lid on excessive taxes and spending, 55 percent of those surveyed statewide favor its repeal.
Now, you might find it suspicious that a "GOP" group would be pushing a poll calling for the repeal of TABOR. In fact, this was all part of a rather ill-advised and shockingly transparent attempt to shore up the McInnis and Norton campaigns before the Keystone straw poll vote.
As the Denver Post reports, the Colorado Policy Institute which put out this poll is run by none other than Sean Tonner. Yes, the Sean Tonner that Scott McInnis said would be running a 527 coordinating with his campaign. Monica Owens is also on staff with the Colorado Policy Institute. Yes, the same Monica Owens that McInnis described as "working for us through Sean Tonner." The Denver Post reports the following weak denial from McInnis’ campaign spokesman:
A spokesman for McInnis, Sean Duffy, said the campaign had "absolutely zero" connection to Tonner and CPI.
The only conclusion that any rational human being can come to is that Scott McInnis’ campaign is lying. Blatantly lying. He was caught on tape stating his intent to coordinate with a committee set up by Sean Tonner. For him to claim that he has "no connection" to Tonner or the Colorado Policy Institute is laughable. Unsurprisingly, the CPI/McInnis/Phaseline crew is intimately involved with Jane Norton’s senate campaign as well.
The poll was obviously timed to blunt the negative reaction to McInnis’ skipping out on the Keystone candidate forum and Jane Norton’s lackluster showing among a room of people who are supposed to be her core supporters. Norton had a detailed press release out almost immediately after the poll’s publication (a poll which suspiciously chose to leave out Ryan Frazier). In their trademark tone-deaf fashion; Tonner, McInnis, and Norton’s crews didn’t even bother to give the appearance that it was anything but a coordinated scheme.
The real question now is what the calculation behind attempting to undermine TABOR was. Was this simply sheer stupidity? Was it a calculated move to sideline fiscal conservatives (Norton’s disdain of them is no secret) in the party?
Whatever the case; they have managed in one fell swoop to revive the "ethically-challenged Republican" meme going into 2010 and to embolden Democratic assaults on TABOR.
Way to go, guys. Hope it was worth it.
