One Derek Hunter of RightWing News channels Pastor Niemoeller, with this explanatory observation – Sooner or Later Progressives Will Get Around to You:
If there’s one thing progressives love it’s a power grab in the name of “doing good,” and the “good” they most often wrap themselves in is “for the children.” When they eventually discover the “good” they sought to accomplish by quashing a little piece of our personal liberty did not come to pass, they never reverse course and retract their government intrusion. Instead, they offer a solution that seizes a little bit more. It’s a never-ending cycle of self-fulfilling prophecies, a Yellow Brick Road that leads to an Emerald Prison of mini-tyrannies populated by a disconnected people who stood by doing nothing because the power government was exerting did not affect them…
You may not care about any of the targets progressives are pursuing now or in the near future, but they will run out of things you don’t care about before they run out of will to control. Sooner or later they will come after something you like or do. If you sit by do nothing as the individual liberty of others is continually limited, you’d better hope there are enough people left able and willing to speak up when they get around to you.
Of course, a good Progressive like Alan Franklin will denounce such conclusions as the paranoid ravings of a political movement gone crazy, but there is little controversial in Hunter’s conclusions: if you permit (or facilitate) the expansion of oppressive government power, eventually that expansion will touch on something important to you. This is one of the roots of the right’s opposition to big government: by its nature, big government cannot help but grow bigger, more intrusive, and more oppressive over time. Progressives put the “progress” in this progression by pushing legislation that expands government control more deeply into more areas, a little bit at a time (which makes their choice of label for their movement perhaps more apt than they intended), always advertised as a small, commonsense, unobjectionable, majority-approved, for-the-children change to which no decent and non-unhinged person could possibly object. And when that incremental change fails to correct the problem it was ostensibly to solve, well then, we just need another click of the ratchet to make things well. What Progressives cannot accomplish in one bold move, they accomplish piecewise, building authoritarianism one “commonsense” reform and one “minor” regulation and one government-issued hall-pass at a time.
