Second Amendment Attack

by | 9:10 am, February 20, 2013 | Comments Off

As most Coloradans have noticed over the past few weeks, our second amendment rights have been under attack – nationally as well as under our Capital’s dome. Monday, four ill-conceived, poorly written, and somewhat confusing bills were passed in the state House. Voting was along party lines with a few Democrat dissenters joining all Republicans against, making relatively close votes. To wit:

Bill / Description / Votes
HB13-1224 Magazine Ban YES: 34 D; NO: 28 R, 3 D (Garcia, Lebsock, Vigil)
HB13-1226 Ban College Carry YES: 34 D; NO: 28 R, 3 D (Garcia, Lebsock, Vigil)
HB13-1228 Payment Bkgrnd Check YES: 33 D; NO: 28 R, 4 D (Garcia, Vigil, Young, Mitsch Bush)
HB13-1229 Universal Bkgrnd Check YES: 36 D; NO: 28 R, 1 D (Vigil)

Next, these four bills will proceed to our Senate, it’s committees, hearings, then for a vote. If they pass the Senate, they will likely speedily head to Governor Hickenlooper for his signature or veto. The senate process will begin this week.

The public’s turnout for the show in the House was very significant. Liberty-minded people must continue to be involved in the bill’s progression through the Senate and to the Governor, if necessary. Our participation has been keenly noticed by the anti-gun and moderate Democrats as well as the Governor, and will continue to have significant impact. If pro-liberty minded folks continue their efforts, these feel-good bills may be defeated and our legislature may actually consider reasonable ways to stop the violence we’ve seen in Colorado and elsewhere.

America’s eyes are on Colorado and the direction we take to encourage liberty and safety. Do not sit on the sidelines – get involved! Connect with Rocky Mountain Gun Owners’ efforts to receive automated updates on Colorado’s second amendment issues and follow RMGO’s Billwatch webpage.
