An Effective Rollback on the Drinking Age is Likely Doomed, but, Cheers, All the Same

Earlier, I wrote about the announcement that High Times will hold its 2013 Cannabis Cup in Denver.  That’s not the only movement on ending legal prosecution for using intoxicating substances.

Senator Greg Brophy, not, I admit, a name on my short list when I saw the headline, wants to allow 18 years olds to drink in public, when accompanied by a parent.  The article also informs me that it’s never been illegal for minors to drink at home their parents’ consent.  Meaning all the times I thought I was thumbing my nose at The Man, pairing calculus homework with a modest Pinot Noir, I was not.  Somehow, I’ve got to make up for that.  Please send along all recommendations for appropriate remedial sinning.

Anyway…where was I…right…SB 54.  It’s a decent enough idea, and Sen. Brophy reports wide popularity among fellow lawmakers, with Rep. Priola co-sponsoring.  But, the bill has been sent to Veterans and Military Affairs, effectively an abattoir for legislation the majority dislikes.  At least one non-sensical editorial has already lambasted the idea and the restaurant lobby is against it, understandably anxious over liability for anything a teen does under the influence of a water down daiquiri.  The answer to that, however, is tort reform.

The Senator’s argument is essentially that a parent’s right to make decisions about a child’s intake shouldn’t end at the threshold of the family home.  I agree.  At 18, we treat people like adults in nearly every respect, save demon run and the far more dangerous prospect of running for Congress.  That whole gambit about 21 is just the artifact of a Federal government trying to trade highway dollars for compliance.

Oh…that explains sending the bill to the death committee.  Won’t do to give D.C. a reason to cut off the cash, now, would it?  Ah, well.
