Grassroots activists and advocates for free markets and liberty throughout Colorado will be amassing on Saturday, December 3 before the West Steps of the Colorado State Capitol in what is being billed as a counter-demonstration to Occupy Wall Street.
The Free Markets, Free People Rally will demonstrate citizens’ support for the nation’s founding principles of limited government, economic freedom, and private charity.
Supporters will promote the benefits of private charity by conducting a charity food drive. The goal of this drive is to aid struggling Americans most in need of assistance, especially during the economic downturn and the cold, winter months.
Over the past couple of days, there has been a great deal of discussion and deliberation amongst the organizers as to which charity will be the focus of our rally’s support. The choices were narrowed down to two: The Denver Rescue Mission and Step 13. Given the value of each of these private organizations, the group tasked me with arbitrating a discussion and concluding which organization we would gather donations on behalf of.
After much thought and consideration, I have concluded that the most logical choice for us to donate to is Step 13.
Initially I was favorable to the Denver Rescue Mission. Their mission is broad but their reach and their media recognition are tremendous. They do excellent work and help thousands of people regularly. However, one of the things that we need to keep in mind is which charity most effectively embodies the ideals of private charity, not government force, and individual responsibility and self-reliance – hand ups, not hand-outs.
Step 13 has a clear and focused mission and is very efficient with how they utilize their resources, key traits for survival in a free market. They accomplish their objectives not only with minimal resources, but they do so without state, federal, or city government funding. Moreover, those who are a part of the Step 13 program have made the difficult decision to change their lives for the better, and sometimes people really need that assistance. It is better to have an organization like that handle recoveries of this sort than the government. Step 13 embodies the old adage of teaching a man to fish, not just giving him a fish.
Given that focus on self-reliance in the midst of private charity, I have concluded that Step 13 is the most logical fit for our rally’s donation drive effort. Few organizations embody the principles which drive this rally as fully as Step 13.
Join us in the effort to stand up for free people and free markets, not more government, to solve our problems. Join us in taking a stand for private charity. Join us at the Free Markets, Free People Rally!
