Hear That Whistle Blowin’?
by Joshua Sharf | 6:50 pm, November 30, 2011
It’s not very loud just yet. But if you bend down, ear to the rails, you can hear the ever-so-quiet singing of a train in the distance. It’s the Hillary Special, and it’s scheduled to pull into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., on January 21st, 2013. The engine has always been there, in the railyard, getting refitted [...]

Chavez Imposes Price Controls to “Protect the People from Capitalism”
by Bob Adelmann | 12:46 pm, November 30, 2011
The standard economic mantra is “Price controls never work.” By that it is meant that such controls never solve the inflation problem created by printing money. But remember what’s really at stake here: “people controls.” And since Chavez is an avowed socialist, price fixing is just another move to control people.
How Would Colorado’s Largest School Districts Fare on Brookings Choice Index?
by Eddie | 11:36 am, November 30, 2011
The Brookings Institution has released a new “Education Choice and Competition Index” (ECCI) to rate the availability of schooling options for families in the nation’s 25 largest school districts (H/T Eduwonk). RiShawn Biddle has a great breakdown of the index’s strengths and shortcomings, including the need for a clearer picture of the quality of choices [...]

Wonk Talk: Judicial Federalism
by Jon Caldara | 4:51 pm, November 29, 2011
Ok, maybe my title is a bit of an overstatement. Granted, podcasts on issues surrounding the law are rarely outside the confines of “wonk,” somehow our resident Constitutional Law scholar Professor Rob Natelson makes constitutional law, legal matters and history consumable even at my level. His latest iVoices.org podcast is on judicial federalism. …Judicial whaaaattt?

Re<C: Wrong answer for Google
by amy | 4:29 pm, November 29, 2011
Just as I finally learned what “Re<C” means, Google is abandoning its financially unsustainable project. The acronym stands for Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal. No wonder I didn’t know what it meant. The equation is all wrong.
Paul Chesser, an associate fellow for the National Legal and Policy Center, reports that Google came face to face [...]

by CTBC Director | 7:29 am, November 29, 2011
Monday’s meeting of the Colorado Reapportionment Commission (charged with drawing our state legislative district boundaries) opened on a contentious note, with Commissioner Wellington Webb stating, “I don’t like the court’s ruling – I feel that it reduces the commission’s discretion” and failed to improve in tone until the meeting was summarily closed on a motion from [...]
Problems Abound?
by amy | 7:14 am, November 29, 2011
Eric Wesoff of GreenTechSolar is curious about what is going on at Abound Solar. Are top executives just finding sunnier pastures elsewhere or are they jumping ship before it goes down Solyndra style?
In July 2010, President Obama announced that Colorado-based Abound Solar was the recipient of a $400 million taxpayer guaranteed loan as part of [...]

Critics Ought to Stop Bashing Straw-Constructed Online Education Facsimiles
by Eddie | 3:45 pm, November 28, 2011
With all the breathless attention on K-12 online education these days, you’d almost think it was a brand-new phenomenon — not something that got its start in Colorado more than a decade ago. This time it’s the Washington Post, chiming in to note that some are questioning the educational value of cyberschools.
Am I surprised? No. [...]

There’s No Sexy in Medicaid
by Jon Caldara | 2:22 pm, November 28, 2011
In the constant struggle for taxpayer dollars, there exists one big budget item that tends to get lost in shuffle: Medicaid.
Medicaid plays a particularly cruel trick on state budgets. As the economy takes a turn for the worse, revenues coming into the government decline. Coloradans are making less money and paying less in taxes. In [...]

San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center spreads flawed justifications for mandatory insurance
by Brian T. Schwartz | 6:30 am, November 28, 2011
Gena Akers of the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center writes that requiring people to buy politician-approved health plan “works” because “free-riders are not allowed, therefore no cost-shifting.” This common justification for mandatory insurance (a.k.a., the individual mandate) is dubious at best and misleading at worst.
