Colorado Congressional Redistricting goes to the courts

by | 4:11 pm, May 12, 2011

For the fourth consecutive decade, the ultimate decision on the shape of Colorado’s Congressional districts will fall to the courts.  Despite Colorado’s clear constitutional language assigning responsibility for Congressional redistricting to the General Assembly, the state legislature again failed to pass a redistricting bill and abdicated responsibility to the judicial branch – further politicizing the [...]

The Euro-Federal Crisis

The European Union is going through its federal-state crisis, forced into the debate on federal vs. national power by circumstance rather than by choice, just as we were 224 years ago.  There are significant differences, to be sure, and we’ll get to those.  But what it happening now is a result of similar tensions to [...]

Guest-hosting for Michael Brown on KOA tonight

by | 5:36 am, May 12, 2011

I’ll have the privilege of sitting in for Michael Brown on Newsradio 850 KOA tonight (Thursday, May 12) from 7 PM to 10 PM Mountain Time.

We’ll have a lively discussion – as Michael always does – on the topics of the day and week. I particularly want to talk about immigration, including Obama’s speech on that topic on Tuesday as well as the lesson’s I’ve learned from the comments to my American Spectator article on Wednesday. Let’s just say I think any sort of legislation is all but impossible.

My guests will include:

Col. John Carney, President and CEO of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. The Special Operations Warrior Foundation provides full scholarship grants and educational and family counseling to the surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions and immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel and their families.

Congressman Jared Polis (Democrat from Boulder) to discuss the federal budget, immigration, and more. Look for some interesting questions as listeners have the chance to speak to a Democrat congressman, and please keep those questions polite!

And for the show’s third hour, Yaron Brook (Facebook page here), President of the Ayn Rand Institute, to give us a much different perspective from Jared Polis’ views on some of the same key issues of our day. As an Israeli, I’ll also be looking forward to Yaron’s views on the implications of the death of Osama bin Laden for the Middle East.

Please listen in and don’t be shy about joining the conversation by calling the studio at 303 713 8585 – not that KOA is usually short on callers with opinions.

Out-of-towners can listen online via the “Listen Live” link at the top left of the KOA web page:

Obama’s broken clock on immigration

by | 6:25 am, May 11, 2011

President Obama was better than usual, but not as good as he should have been, during a speech about immigration policy reform he gave in El Paso on Tuesday afternoon. (Text of speech here.)

He correctly noted that the current system is broken, that we train our own competition, break up families, and generally do ourselves no favors with the current system. He also said – and I agree – that immigration reform is “an economic imperative.”

He gave better lip service than usual to the important point that illegals are illegal, and that people who broke the law to come here or stay here should not be rewarded, not least because of how unfair it is to people who wait years to do it the right way.

Being who he is, Obama couldn’t help but get in a couple of jabs against the Republicans, stupidly making it far too transparent that his push on this issue is at least as much due to electoral politics than to his caring about policy.

Please read my entire article for the American Spectator here:
