Kjersten Forseth on ProgressNow’s Latest Boogeyman

Today’s fundraising appeal from our friends at ProgessNow is so ill-considered that it’s actually comical.
Dear Neighbor,
It’s been said that Colorado’s right-wing Secretary of State, Scott Gessler, did not truthfully expect to be elected last year. Not only is Gessler an infamous partisan political attorney with a long history of defending clients accused of election law violations, but he never really tried to get elected, either: he never raised much money or even campaigned much. It’s almost as if he was elected by accident.
So, let’s unpack this. Setting aside her juvenile scaremongering (“right-wing!”, “infamous partisan!”), what is Kjersten saying here?
First, she’s hinting that there’s something nefarious about an election law attorney defending clients accused of election law violations.
Yes. That’s right. An election law attorney defending clients accused of election law violations, is somehow ethically questionable, rather than being part of the job by definition. It’s a bit like saying “I don’t trust that plumber…he works with pipes.” Well, yes…if he didn’t he wouldn’t be a plumber, now would he? Or to illustrate the absurdity in terms nearer the bleeding hearts of our friends on the left, what she’s doing is equivalent to casting aspersions on the character of a public defender for defending accused criminals in court. And here I thought that everyone accused of a crime deserved competent representation before the law.
Second and more amusing, she inadvertently takes a swipe at former Secretary of State Bernie Buescher. It’s not actually true that Gessler didn’t “campaign much” — by October I swear I could have recited his “zombie election” stump speech from memory — but if it were true, and he really didn’t try to get elected, what does that say about the incumbent candidate? Was his opponent that bad of a Secretary of State, or so reviled by the public, that a plurality (a hair shy of a simple majority, in fact) of Colorado voters wanted someone, anyone, but Bernie Buescher?
Third, taken together with the rest of the paragraph, the “elected by accident” comment implies that there was something fishy about Scott Gessler winning the election. Is Kjersten suggesting that maybe, somehow, the election was rigged? If so, the inadvertent irony of complaining about someone winning a rigged election in a diatribe against that person for working for fair, open, and legal elections is delicious.
Now that Scott Gessler is in office, though, he seems determined to do as much damage to Colorado’s elections–and the right of Coloradans to vote–as he possibly can.
Right. By ensuring that only Coloradans can vote in Colorado elections. He must be stopped!!!
From now until Election Day 2012, one of ProgressNow Colorado’s biggest jobs is to stop Gessler from carrying out his intentions to suppress the vote. Please join us–make a small monthly contribution to ProgressNow Colorado, and help us fight Scott Gessler every step of the way.
Which is funny, since Scott Gessler isn’t actually up for reelection until 2014. No, the biggest job at ProgressNow is to use fearmongering and intellectual dishonesty to bring in the benjamins to support their own “infamously partisan” attacks on Republicans as Republicans. Note that she doesn’t say that they will only fight what they frame as vote suppression, ProgressNow plans to fight everything that Gessler does while in office, for partisan (and pecuniary) reasons.
Since Gessler’s stated agenda for his tenure as Colorado Secretary of State is to restore confidence and improve fairness and transparency in our election processes, one can be forgiven for interpreting from the fact that they wish to “fight [him] every step of the way” that ProgressNow favors the dead casting ballots from the Great Beyond, voters casting multiple ballots in multiple precincts, others fraudulently voting under multiple identities, and yes, non-Colorado-residents casting votes in Colorado elections.
Somewhere along the way, “Progressive” apparently became a synonym for “projection”. Does anyone at ProgressNow actually read these missives before they are sent out?
But Gessler won’t give up on suppressing the vote as easily. With your help, we’ll fight him every step of the way–and we’ll win. Please take a moment to join ProgressNow Colorado with a small monthly donation–$10, $20, or whatever you can throw in, and help us protect the most important right we have.
Thank you,
Kjersten Forseth
If you give generously, maybe they’ll have enough left over to hire someone who can write better emails.

Fine post my friend! Especially enjoyed “I don’t trust that plumber…he works with pipes.”
Evidently fear mongering & non-critical thinking are good fundraising tools. Hmm… maybe that’s why we are all broke.
