Trick or Treating for Votes In Weld County

by | 6:42 pm, October 31, 2010 | Comments Off

It appears that a couple of  folks dressed up and acting like Democrat Get Out The Vote (GOTV) workers added a Halloween twist to chasing ballots and getting out voters in Weld County, Colorado this week. Here is the press release regarding the October 27th incident from GOP County Chair, Karen Pelzer:

Weld GOP Requests Investigation Into Potential Violations With Weld Democrat Get Out The Vote Efforts

The Weld County Republican Party yesterday requested an investigation into claims of possible election violations on the part of the Weld County Democrat Party.

Weld GOP Chair Karen Pelzer received a phone call from a US Postal Carrier assigned in Greeley reporting a conversation the postal carrier overheard and with which she ultimately became involved.

The carrier indicated she overheard a conversation between a resident in an apartment building along her mail route and two persons carrying a clipboard and wearing a Democrat 2010 hat. The Democrat operative asked the resident if they had received their mail in ballot and whether they had returned it. The resident responded that it was received but not yet mailed.

The Democrat operative then informed the resident that Wednesday (October 27th) was the last day to send in their ballot, and that the Democratic Party really needed to get their vote in. The operative indicated that she could provide the resident with 61 cents in postage, or she could take the ballot and return it for her.

At this point, the mail carrier interjected urging the resident not to give the ballot to anyone she didn’t know. She also reminded the resident that she, as a mail carrier, would ensure her ballot was properly mailed. The mail carrier also informed the resident that this was not the last day to vote.

The mail carrier has provided a specific description of the Democrat operatives, along with the address where the alleged conversation occurred, which has been forwarded to the Weld County Clerk and Recorder as part of the investigation request.

The mail carrier told Pelzer she didn’t care who a person voted for, but she could not tolerate unfair elections, and therefore felt compelled to come forward. ”I heard what I heard and it’s not right,” the mail carrier said.

Pelzer has requested an immediate investigation into the allegations that this US Postal Carrier has raised. ”Colorado law allows a person to collect and turn in a limited number of ballots. However, just as clearly, the number of ballots that a person is allowed to collect is limited to ten per person, and it is a violation of the law to offer anything of value in return for a vote. Both the Colorado Attorney General and the Secretary of State have issued specific guidance that postage may not be offered to a voter in connection with an election.”

Pelzer further stated that “it is unacceptable to try and intimidate a person into voting early by giving them false information regarding when mail in ballots need to be returned.”

Weld County has always been known for fair elections. ”It is our sincere hope that this investigation reveals this confrontation with a voter was an isolated incident. However, given the serious nature of the allegations, it must be investigated.”

Voters may hand deliver a mail in ballot to any polling center until 7pm on Election Day, Tuesday, November 2nd. Weld county voters may also vote in person at Early Vote Centers through tonight, October 29th, or from 7am to 7pm on Election Day. The locations of Vote Centers may be found at http://www.co.weld.co.us/.

First the Trick – Indicate that day was last to send in ballot

Then the Treat – Offer to provide correct postage

With this and reports of other voting “irregularities” around the county, it is little wonder that various political analysts and commentators have renewed calls for voters to turn out in large enough numbers to have the results of races be beyond the threshold of an automatic recount and outside of the margin of lawyers to avoid a repeat of what happened in the 2008 race for U.S. Senate from Minnesota.
Special Note: So far only Complete Colorado has given this story detailed coverage.  The Greeley Tribune offered only a brief story that the District Attorney’s office is investigating on October 29, 2010.
