Dem. Poll Shows Hickenlooper Lead Trimmed To 3%: Colo. Governor’s Race a Toss-Up
by Laura Victoria | 12:09 pm, October 25, 2010
Public Policy Polling, a Democratic-leaning polling firm, just released a poll that shows Hickenlooper’s lead over Tom Tancredo trimmed to only three points in the volatile Colorado governor’s race, 47-44. Dan Maes proved my colleague Don Johnson’s awesome predictive … Continue reading →![]()
Can Denver Leaders Rise Above Education Reform Backlash to Make Needed Progress?
by Eddie | 10:24 am, October 25, 2010
It sure looks like Denver’s education reform backlash has made some noise of late. As the editors of the Denver Post explain today, what’s really absurd is the venomous propaganda being launched at successful charter schools in the district’s proposal to expand them into the northeast region of the city’s troubled education system:
DPS has produced [...]

Tancredo and bombing Mecca
by Rossputin | 9:00 am, October 25, 2010
The media and Democrats routinely comment on – and misrepresent – Tom Tancredo’s now well-known statment about “bombing Mecca.”
This issue deserves some clarification. Whether or not you agree with Tancredo’s thinking, the full context of his statement (and by the way, he did not use the words “bomb Mecca”, though his intent was along those lines) is important.
I’ll summarize to keep this brief:
In July, 2005, Florida radio talk show host Pat Campbell asked Tancredo what should be done if there were nuclear attacks by Muslim radicals inside the US. In response to that specific question, Tancredo said:
“Well, what if you said something like — if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, um, you know, you could take out their holy sites…”
Campbell then uttered the famous part of the conversation (again, I’m not suggesting that it wasn’t Tancredo’s meaning, but he didn’t say the famous words…)
Campbell: You’re talking about bombing Mecca.
Tancredo: Yeah. What if you said — what if you said that we recognize that this is the ultimate threat to the United States — therefore this is the ultimate threat, this is the ultimate response.
Now, I’m not saying that Tancredo’s idea is sound military or game theory. Indeed, conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt thinks it’s a stupd threat to make.
But the Mulsim radicals and their apologists who imply that Tancredo was suggesting that we attack Mecca or Medina now, or that the purpose of an attack would be to “send a message” are simply lying…as they always do.
Tancredo’s statement might not have been the wisest thing ever, but it must be remembered that the question was in the context of Muslim nuclear attacks inside the US. Tancredo’s approach, while not something I’d have said, it most certainly was not what the left tries to make it out to be.
Let me put it another way: If Denver were attacked with a nuclear weapon and you found out that the act was carried out by Muslim radicals, what do you think would be the proper response?
Not very many of you would give the same answer Tancredo gave…but I bet it would at least cross your minds. I wouldn’t bomb Mecca, but I can’t say the though of it wouldn’t occur to me for a moment before being dismissed as counter-productive at best.

Denver Post owes Bob Schaffer an apology

Denver Post owes Bob Schaffer an apology
by Rossputin | 6:32 am, October 25, 2010
In 2008, when Bob Schaffer was running for U.S. Senate, Denver Post news editor Curtis Hubbard allowed his propagandist-reporter Mike Riley to run a series of borderline-libel pieces attacking Schaffer for his interest in the Marianas Islands (“CNMI”).
The short version of the story is that Riley served as a megaphone for left-wing political and economic interests who accused Schaffer of being the agent of sinister conservatives and sweat shops, in particular using guilt-by-association from Schaffer’s first introduction to the region by criminal lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
The real story, which I laid out in the most exhaustive investigative reporting I’ve ever done (27 written pages and 10 blog posts, starting HERE) is that Schaffer was deeply interested in the CNMI, not least in rumors – which Schaffer investigated on his own time while excluding local government officials who might have scared witnesses – about forced abortions taking place on the islands.
Separate from the abortion issue, however, was a push by one Alan Stayman, a truly evil player in this story, to destroy the garmet industry in the CNMI, one of the islands’ largest employers, in order to minimize competition with US-based garmet workers’ unions.
The unions and union-owned Democrat Congressman George Miller (CA) used Stayman, a US Department of Interior employee, and others to further their goal of forcing the CNMI (and American Samoa) to abide by the US’s minimum wage laws, something they knew would bankrupt the islands’ garment (and other) industries. (Stayman committed crimes through his actions. A government Inspector General found his and his office’s behavior to be the “most egregious” the IG had seen in 30 years of such work. Stayman was forced from his job, but was never charged.)
As CNMI Governor Ben Fitial reported, the results of the minimum wage imposition has been an “economic holocaust.”
But of course nobody believed Fitial, with the left characterizing him as, like Schaffer, a tool of the exploiters. The Post’s Riley made similar reprehensible insuations about Fitial, and again tried to use guilt-by-association against Schaffer, who became a good friend of Fitial’s because Fitial realized that Schaffer, unlike most Congressman, really came there to learn what was going on and to try to help the people of the Northern Marianas if he could.
(While I can’t prove it, items in Riley’s reporting make me believe that he was being fed information/propaganda directly or indirectly by Stayman, or at least by Stayman’s union thug friends, for the Post’s articles.)
Therefore, it was both sad and gratifying to have the “I told you so” moment last week when the Washington Times reported the following:
Just three years after a Democrat-led Congress imposed the federal minimum wage on two U.S. territories in the Pacific, lawmakers last month halted the program in its tracks, acknowledging the move had sapped thousands of jobs from American Samoa and the commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands…
The bill passed without dissent in the Senate, and with just a handful of opponents in the House. President Obama signed it into law on Sept. 30.
“The Democrat Congress voted to pass a minimum-wage increase for these territories in 2007, and therefore, it was only appropriate that they vote again to fix it,” said Rep. Doc Hastings of Washington, who led Republican efforts in the House. “In doing so, Democrats were admitting that they were wrong to impose this policy that cost real people their jobs.”
Of course the Denver Post, which operated as the opposition research arm of the Mark Udall campaign in 2008 and has continued in that role for other Democrat campaigns in this election cycle (much more through its news department than through its editorial pages), didn’t report the story. In a bitterly amusing way, I note that a Google search of the Denver Post site for “CNMIs minimum wage” returns only a story entitled “Abramoff ties cloud Schaffer’s ‘99 fact-finding trip.” Just as it was when I was debunking Mike Riley’s propaganda in 2008, I can only shake my head in disgust.
When I sent Bob Schaffer this article (which he hadn’t seen because, as I said, the Denver Post didn’t report it), he responded: “I was the bad guy for basically seeing this coming and speaking up when House Dems and the AFL-CIO were ganging up on the CNMI… The CNMI went from a net taxpayer jurisdiction to a welfare state thanks to the Democrats.”
Looks like the Dems have done that to almost every state in the union in the couple of years since then, but that’s a story for another day.
Mike Riley and Curtis Hubbard: If you had a shred of decency, of journalistic ethics, you would write a public apology (or at least a private one if you don’t have what it takes to admit your error in public) to Bob Schaffer, a good man who was doing good work in the CNMI – and everywhere else he’s served or tried to help while in public office.

DC unions bankroll Colorado campaign against Amendment 63
by Brian Schwartz | 5:00 am, October 25, 2010
Economist Linda Gorman writes: People who need to spend $100,000 to interpret 90 words of a ballot initiative, that the Blue Book interprets for free, shouldn’t have much credibility when it comes to controlling health care costs. That’s how much the campaign against the health care choice amendment, Amendment 63, spent on fancy campaign consultants. [...]

U.S. Reps. Salazar and Perlmutter deploy the stimulus smear
by Kelly Maher | 12:26 pm, October 24, 2010
U.S. Reps. John Salazar and Ed Perlmutter of Colorado think they’ve got a winning issue by smearing their Republican challengers with stimulus spending. But it reveals desperation by the Democratic incumbents. See the cringe-inducing video clip of President Obama in July calling out U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., for not supporting the stimulus.

Elliot Fladen: The Colorado governor’s race debate, animated
by Rossputin | 10:22 am, October 24, 2010
I’m not sure just what to make of Elliot turning me into a British Queen for the purposes of this video…
For the record, I think it’s mostly quite a well-balanced discussion of the issues facing conservative and Republican voters, though Elliot (as he often does) goes a bit off the deep end in the last 30 seconds, in his – who else would it be? – Einstein persona.
It’s only fair for the “artist” to get the last word. And while I disagree with Elliot’s conclusion, it’s nevertheless clever and fairly balanced work and worth a few minutes of your time.
(I’m having a little trouble with embedding the video, so if it doesn’t work try the link instead.)

Please join Christopher Sanders, sitting in for Ross Kaminsky, on this week’s edition of Backbone Radio when he’ll be joined by a slew of guests, both candidates and activists, talking about the most important election in many years, coming up in just two weeks (with early voting already well under way.)
Our goal tonight is to speak with as many different candidates as we can in our three hours. We will also be joined by Denver County Republican Chair Ryan Call to discuss how we the people can get involved and make real change and bring Hope and Freedom back to America. Ryan will be with us through the whole show so if you have any questions or comments feel free to call in. Our studio number is (303) 696 1971.
In our first hour, Christopher will be joined by Danny Stroud, candidate for State House District 1, after which candidate for Colorado’s 7th Congressional District, Ryan Frazier, will join the conversation. We hope and expect Frazier to defeat Obama-pawn Ed Perlmutter when the votes are counted.
In the second hour, guests will include Steve Bosley, at-large candidate for University of Colorado Regent, a position he holds currently and in which he is a stalwart champion of true diversity – not just diversity of liberals – within our state’s higher education system.
Republican candidate for Secretary of State, Scott Gessler, will also join the show in the second hour.
And finally, in the 7-o’clock hour, Christopher will be joined by Dr. Mike Fallon, in studio to answer your questions about his efforts to unseat Dianne DeGette. Dr. Fallon is fighting a long uphill slog to restore the concept of the citizen legislator to the Colorado 1st but he is up to it.
