Where would Dan Maes go?

Reader “Airbus” says he thinks Maes will withdraw, but not until after the deadline “so he can stick it to the party.”

I think that’s not a bad bet, but I disagree.

My guess is that Maes stays in to the end.

At this point, it’s about his ego and his future.

Remember, he’s a very modestly successful businessman…or rather he was.  Now he’s an unemployed former re-seller of credit reports and voice mail services.

Where’s he gonna go if he drops out?

At least if he stays in, he can put a few bucks into his bank account by draining his campaign contributions via “mileage reimbursements.”

He probably thinks – and it probably would have been right a few weeks ago but no longer – that his chances of winning some other political race in the future would be damaged by dropping out.

At this point, I repeat, where’s he gonna go if he drops out?

He doesn’t have money to start a new business.  At least one former employer has said publicly that he would not re-hire Maes, not least because Maes secretly planned started a competing business while working for him.

Maes has become the butt of insults and even jokes. If I were Maes, I’d almost feel like I need to move out of the state if I don’t win the election.

Furthermore, if Maes really wants to spite the GOP, he’d be better off staying in the whole time than getting out after the ballots are certified.

What else?  It basically doesn’t cost Dan Maes anything to stay in.  He gets to extend his 15 minutes of fame while having no responsibility other than keeping track of the very small number of campaign contribution dollars he’ll receive in the future.  He hasn’t hired a campaign manager, though he does have a “communications director” (quite a decent guy whom I feel sorta sorry for at this point.)

I hope, for the sake of Colorado, that Dan Maes has the good sense to quit the race within the next hour.  But I doubt he will.  After all, where’s he gonna go if he does?

    Ross,
Would it be a foolish idea to have grass roots moneybomb to bribe Maes to drop out if he is so short of funds? Assuming legality of the idea, of course.

    Ross,
I would like your analysis on if Dan Maes should win what do you see him doing as Governor that would take this state even further down the wrong road. Would he be honored by the Apollo Alliance (who wrote the stimulus package) like Bill Ritter? Would he be on video saying Van Jones the self avowed communist IS A ROCK STAR? Would he ignore the problems in the police department? Not tell the citizens of Colorado that Lo-Do has beatings going on to protect his own interests. Will he continue to ignore that Denver is a sanctuary city? I’m interested in your vision of how bad off Colorado would be if Dan Maes became our governor.

    Elliot,

    Maes won’t get out, period.

    Segosouth,

A Maes governorship would be hallmarked by incompetence rather than outright leftism.

It might be slightly better than Hick, but in the Atlas Shrugged spirit of things, I’d rather have the leftist in office, like Barack Obama, so people can see what that really means and then react to it.

A Maes governorship would be led around by the nose by the legislature, particularly dangerous for the state if the Dems keep control of the legislature.

I’m not saying that a Maes governorship would in total be worse than Hick. It wouldn’t. But I am not in the business of supporting the worst possible candidate the GOP can muster. I didn’t support McCain and I won’t support Maes.

    Ross,
I read this sight enough to know that you will not support Maes, and quite frankly I’m not trying ask you to or trying to sway you. I wanted your analyst and you gave it (I would have liked a bit more depth), however I will say that Maes didn’t let the GOP elitist lead him around by the nose. Thanks for your thoughts

    Segosouth,

I said I would back off Maes and let him prove to me that he was worthy of support. I kept my part of the bargain. He’s done anything but prove himself to be electable, much less worthy of support.

I’ve given more than enough analysis in recent weeks and months to feel like I need to give a lot more on this topic at this time.

    Ross,
I enjoy and respect your writings and yes I don’t always agree. I was just curious if a bit more vision was out there other than the incompetent, unelectable, unfit, no intelligence ect… I will keep reading and enjoying.

    Segosouth,

I’ll write more soon on the issue.

It’s hard to have “more vision” about a candidate this bad.

I think I was quite well ahead of the curve on this one, including renewing a call for Maes to get out just before all the “big names” did.

At this point, I think there’s one big question: Can Tom Tancredo win. If so, conservatives should probably be pushing for him at this point. I have to think about it a little more before I really go with this thesis.
