Tom Wiens for Colorado Governor Scenario Unfolding? Don’t Rule It Out

For those who have been paying attention as much as having a half an eye open while trying to sleep, it’s no surprise to hear that virtually every conversation I’ve had in the past several days about the Colorado governor’s race (and it’s no small number) inevitable lands on the word “disaster.” Yes, disaster. Polling numbers bear out what intuition tells us.
We’ve got a Republican primary that will yield either the ethically tainted (but finally agreed to return the $300,000) Scott McInnis or the UN bicycle plot Dan Maes as the gubernatorial nominee. Thrown into the mix is the American Constitution Party’s wildcard Tom Tancredo, who certainly won’t get out while either McInnis or Maes remains in the fray.
Discussing the matter on Facebook — whether among those who have liked the Undervote in the GOP primary or not — I’ve joined others at the conclusion that the only chance to redeem the situation is to replace the primary winner (provided he agrees to step down) with a wealthy, credible candidate who can self-fund.
Two names that have made sense thus far are Marc Holtzman and Tom Wiens. Interestingly, Wiens tells Politico today that he is eyeing the race. All the right things are said by the right people in the story. Reading between the lines, I surmise that many parties are working together behind the scenes to push McInnis across next Tuesday’s primary finish line and rally support behind someone like Wiens.
Will it work? Who knows, but it’s a longshot worth considering at this point. (If Maes is the nominee, then never mind.) How Tom Tancredo might respond to such a move will go a long way toward determining whether this scenario — as I see it unfolding — has a reasonable chance at success. (And helps to bolster the chances of key down-ticket races like Secretary of State candidate Scott Gessler, who finally has an important, high-profile issue with which to go after the incumbent Democrat: disenfranchising military voters.)

Aha, it all makes sense now. Everything depends on the primary though, as you point out.

I’d have a terrible time voting for Marc Holtzman – the king of dirty politics in Colorado.
August 6th, 2010 @ 2:31 pm
I’d have worse than a hard time supporting Holtzman. Wiens is a good candidate and got ripped off of being on the ballot by a corrupt signature petition company.

Were my options in the general election:
Holtzman
Hickenlooper
Tancredo
then I’m voting Tancredo.
Were my options:
Wiens
Hickenlooper
Tancredo
then I’m voting Wiens.
As of now, I expect I’ll be voting Maes come the general.

Holtzman…….someone is kidding right? Right? Is the state GOP in that bad of shape that his name is even mentioned for any office? He would be in over his head at the local 7-11 working the late shift.

Maes will win the primary. Maes will not drop out and if the GOP tries to buy him out – they will lose many Republicans. They can’t just choose who THEY want. It’s the people, stupid.
Maes is a man of his word and will not drop out. He’s in it to the finish. Paying a 17,000 fine is peanuts compared to ripping off someone of $300.00 like McInsult. Those of us who voted for Maes will not allow the state party to rule the people.
After the election, the GOP leaders needs replacement in this state. Maes – Fight to the Finish

I have been a Republican for 25 years and I have to tell you all that we will literally going to need a miracle to have a Republican Governor elected in 2010.
August 7th, 2010 @ 10:32 am
Marc Holtzman is the king of all dirty campaigning in Colorado. Soon to take the top spot is Jane Norton. Marc will be relieved to cede the distinction to Jane.
If they stick Holtzman in there, I will literally stand on street corners for Hickenlooper. Wait … what am I saying?
August 7th, 2010 @ 5:54 pm
Rebel,
we can be that particular miracle if we want to be.
We can elect a Conservative, but we are going to have get together, work together and not bicker over the little crap.
Now the question is, how bad do we really want a Conservative governor?
I suspect we will find out in short order after the August 10th primary.
August 7th, 2010 @ 10:44 pm
It’s 2010. We need something different in politics. Like an ethical businessman, not some more of the same old politicians who owe people and want to play the old GOP games. The way we get true conservatives in power is vote for them. Dan Maes is the true conservative. He’s the people’s choice. He got 40% of the caucus votes…..he was told that “they” thought he’d get 10%. He won the Assembly….no one thought he could. He can win the primary (vote for him) and people, he can beat John Hickenlooper. Mark my word. He’s the person who can beat John Hickenlooper so get behind him and support him.
August 7th, 2010 @ 10:45 pm
Oh, and P.S. Dan Maes is one really smart guy. Truly
August 8th, 2010 @ 9:19 am
I think the people who think Dan Maes is smart and ethical either don’t know Maes, haven’t been paying attention or really don’t know smart from dumb or right from wrong.
August 8th, 2010 @ 9:20 am
Dan Maes says his parents weren’t very bright. He’s their boy.
August 8th, 2010 @ 10:02 am
Donald, let’s leave out the pointless personal insults. You’ve already established solidly your dislike of and contempt for Dan Maes, no need to get petty.
