Opposing a Religion Does Not Necessarily Make One a “Bigot” – The Reason for Opposition Matters

While the opposition to the Ground-Zero Mosque may be based on political correctness, to the extent that its supporters are calling the opponents “bigots” they are misapplying words. Contrary to their contentions, bigotry is NOT “when a group is protested against just because of their religion.” Instead bigotry is when a group is protested against because it is DIFFERENT.
Here the protests against Islam are NOT BECAUSE IT IS DIFFERENT but rather because of specific elements it is alleged to have – namely an alleged propensity for violence towards its opponents/critics. The very same people opposing the mosque are not out protesting Buddhists or Falun Gong members, but if they were bigots they would. Why? Because although those groups are “different” they aren’t viewed as being as intolerant of criticism, to the point of using violence, as Islam.
In other words, mere opposition to a religion is not enough to trigger the term bigot – the reason for the opposition is what matters.
