Alamosa to Build New City Hall; Rest of CO Gets to Pay for it

A month ago I wrote about the City of Alamosa's push to build a new city hall. The project was delayed because city residents petitioned to force a vote on incurring the debt required to build it. The question was placed on the Primary ballot and passed 942 to 828. It wan an example of why government should be handled at the lowest levels possible.

Unfortunately, the story has a dark side, too. The rest of Colorado gets to help pay for the $6 million project. The city was awarded $500,000 dollars to make the building "more environmentally friendly".

I'm all for making buildings as efficient as possible. That's not my complaint here. I want to know why anyone outside of Alamosa should be paying for it? The Department of Local Affairs divvied up $4.6 million that could have been put to better use funding education, K-12 or higher ed, or filling the $60 million hole in the current state budget.

As a resident of Alamosa, I don't want my tax dollars going to pay for some building in Boulder or Ft. Collins which I'll never see and residents of those cities should be just as upset having to pay for Alamosa's new city hall.
