It’s Official: Tancredo is Running in Colorado

by | 10:08 pm, July 26, 2010 | 5 Comments

Tom Tacredo has made good on his threat to run as a third party candidate for Colorado governor. This hardly comes as a surprise, of course. It leaves things in pretty bad shape for conservatives in Colorado.

I posted a comment on PPC that I'd like to expand on a bit here.

Let’s indulge in a thought experiment. Assume for a moment that McInnis was going to drop out and Maes wasn’t. McInnis would have to win the primary so that he could drop out and hand the nomination to the committee. But McInnis can’t say that before the primary because Maes will jump all over him for it and increase the probability that Maes would win.

Now suppose that McInnis wins the Primary and drops out. The CO GOP names the “perfect” candidate who is not Tancredo. I doubt that Tacredo would back out leaving us with a three way race which could still split the vote handing the election to Hickenlooper. The only way that doesn’t happen is if the CO GOP picks Tancredo as the replacement.

You could reverse the names and still have the same situation. Either way, CO is humped.

There's another option that has its own set of problems. Republicans throw the winner of the Republican primary to the curb and support Tancredo. The main problem is that there is a significantly large block of people who will vote for anyone with an 'R' after their name. As foolish as that is, its still problem that Tancredo will have to deal with.

Republicans have done it before as recently as the special election in NY-23 where the GOP put up Scozzafava. Conservatives rallied around Doug Hoffman. Unfortunately, Hoffman lost that race but I think the same support can happen here in Colorado. All it takes is for the Tea Parties, 9/12 groups to rally behind Tacredo and make McInnis and Maes irrelevant.

Will Colorado Conservatives have the courage to do it?

I think it will be tough to convince grass roots types to rally around a candidate who some contend has made a mockery of the nominating process, and who also, by his own words revealed here ( http://www.peoplespresscollective.org/2010/07/tancredonotafreemarketconservative/ ) showed himself to be hostile to free market principles.

This is not a matter courage in the way you say. It is a matter of courage to vote according to “principle over party” even if that party is a third party. We have had enough of dictums of Reid, Pelosi, and Obama. Enough!

If you truly want voters to be courageous then they would have to vote for Dan Maes. Tancredo is not being consistent. He said in an open leader on December 21, 2009 the following that he has now back tracked on:

“Over the past year, the 9-12 movement and the Tea Party rallies have grown spontaneously out of citizens’ frustration and opposition to this kind of arrogant and corrupt policymaking in Washington, DC. You are right to be angry! You are right to be fed up! And you are right to demand an end to business as usual!”

    and then…

“Many of you in the 9-12 movement and Tea Party groups wanted me to run for Governor, and I considered doing that after my good friend Josh Penry dropped out of the race. After a lot of discussion with family and supporters, I decided there was a better way to promote a conservative agenda for Colorado.”

    and I quote…

“However, if you believe I made a mistake, there is a specific task you can undertake: TAKE OVER THE REPUBLICAN PARTY! Put in the person you believe to be better able to win the election AND advance our cause. All I would stress is that the person you select be able to accomplish BOTH goals.”

“Some patriots are tempted to launch a third political party or back one of the existing small parties that never attract more than one or two percent of the vote in state races. I strongly believe that such a course is suicidal and would only result in splitting the conservative vote and guaranteeing the re-election of liberals and socialists.

I believe the Republican Party is the natural home of conservatives and that the road back to constitutional government lies in taking control of the Republican Party from top to bottom, from county committee to the statehouse and all the way to Washington, D.C.

My friends, winning control of the Republican Party is not a difficult task in Colorado! I say this because 80% or more of Republicans are conservatives. It is only the party leadership that is out of step in some counties.”

His hypocrisy is obvious and stifling.

Don Rodgers of the 9-12 Pikes Peak Patriots said aptly, “In the face their defiance of the People, you have answered by standing up and loudly saying “enough is enough”. No more of Government deciding whats best for us. No more of government elitists separated from the realities of everyday struggles of work and raising families by legislated privilege and exemption from deciding for you. You have decided the time is now to stand up and say,“Government works for us, we do not answer to them”. Yet, Congressman Tancredo in his ultimatum says you, the People, made the wrong choice. You don’t know what you are doing. By demanding that both candidates step down and he be appointed as the candidate or he will run under a minor party ticket, he has gone down the dangerous road of those that believe the People are too stupid to decide.”

Keeping that the above in mind I will support Dan Maes up until the primary and then support the winner. I WILL NOT VOTE FOR TANCREDO… EVER! He can win and he just gave up a possible victory in the governor’s race to the very Progressive Hickenlooper. Guess what kind of judges (for the next 10 years) he will appoint? Thanks alot Tom.

Will someone please explain to me why I should vote for Tancredo? Yes he is strong on immigration but what else does he have? Yes he stood up to Party in DC but how does that help him as Governor? He voted for TARP which opened pandora’s box for dismantling capitalism so how will he govern? He voted for Patriot Act which ignores our rights to individual freedom – so how will he govern?
He showed disdain for the voters by demanding that 2 candidates quit the race because he decided they are unfit – what happened to We the People? How will he govern?

Any candidate cannot win the Governors office without substantial support from Independents – this applies to both Dems & GOP – is Tancredo really capable of winning votes of independents & some Dems plus a majority of GOP?

Put aside the celebrity of Tancredo, step out of the echo chamber and based on logic someone please tell me why I should vote for Tancredo and not McInnis or Maes?

    re: NancyR

It has more to do with not voting for the plagiarist or the guy who broke campaign finance laws.

Frankly, Tancredo would not be one of my top 10 candidates for governor. I’d rather see Josh Penry or even Jane Norton as governor.

I have a great memory. I remember that this economy was great until the democrats swept into power in 2006 and caused the mess we are in today. We don’t have 8 years of failed Bush financial policies to blame like the democrats claim. We have 2 years of failed policies of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid followed by another year and a half of their policies made even worse by Obama.
