Ad blasts Scott McInnis’ plagiarism

by | 6:06 pm, July 29, 2010 | 4 Comments

If Colorado Republicans and Scott McInnis think that Coloradans won't hear about his plagiarism until he is defeated in the primary or general election or until he drops out, they need to watch this ad from Colorado Freedom Fund five times. The ad isn't great, but it shows how the Democrats will deal with a plagiarist. h/t ColoradoPols. The ad stresses the importance of integrity in government. That's the point I'm trying to make.  What I don't agree with is that the ad concludes that McInnis is a "typical politician." No, the reason that he's in trouble is that he has shown that he's more unethical than anyone who's run for governor in this state for decades. He's not typical. He's a sorry outlier. Who's behind Colorado Freedom Fund? Outraged conservatives? Democrats going for the kill? A secret Republican gang? Betrayed supporters? My guess: Someone who wants to convince McInnis to get out is sending him a message he might be able to understand. LINK: Scott McInnis' plagiarism. Colorado Freedom Fund ad on YouTube.

A quick search on the IRS disclosure database reveals that Colorado Freedom Fund is a Democrat 527 registered in the name of Julie Wells:

I’m open to hearing theories why they are spending money attacking Scott McInnis right now. Strange how the Dems also are going after conservative GOP Dean Boehler in a state senate primary against a moderate Republican. This has to be part of the same strategy, but what is it?

    Donald:

The 527 behind this ad is a Democratic group, based on the registered agent, Julie Wells. She’s the registered agent on a number of federal and state 527s tied to Pat Stryker and Tim Gill. See my Coloradoan blog: http://bit.ly/ct2LX8

I agree with Ben. This Colorado Freedom Fund is a big time Dem 527. Julie Wells was the registered agent for Accountability for Colorado who hammered Republicans with false charges in the 2008 election. If McInnis is so wounded and unelectable, why are the big time Dem guns focusing on him.

The Julie Wells question is interesting but not important. What’s important to me is that the ad shows how vulnerable McInnis is.

My suspicion is that Wells is being used as a smoke screen by some conservative/group that wants to send a message to McInnis and his enablers. That message is that McInnis is toast and the GOP is wasting its time backing him.

Since McInnis is known to be less than a student of issues and the kind of guy who doesn’t hear what he’s told, maybe the ad is an attempt to get him to understand that he’s done?

The ad can be rewritten and recast in many ways to destroy McInnis and to hurt the GOP.

The ad may be an attempt to discourage contributors who are backing McInnis. They’ll get it if he doesn’t.

If the ad is the creation of the left, it’s harder to figure out the strategy. Maybe the Dems are worried that he can raise money and force them to spend more than they want destroying him?

Maybe the Dems are saying to possible replacements for McInnis that if the replacement candidate has any skeletons, watch out. Stay out of the race.

Maybe the Dems are thinking that if McInnis drops, he’ll take his time doing it. That won’t give a replacement time to wage a strong campaign and could discourage a strong replacement from wasting time and money challenging Hick.

This is all speculation. What interests me is that the replies to the ad are about who’s behind it, not about what it says about McInnis and the GOP.

Even though some are nitpicking the ad for a variety of reasons, I think it’s a killer ad for McInnis regardless of whether it actually goes on TV or not. If it runs, it will keep the scandal story alive. Maybe that’s all the backers want to do. The longer McInnis is a GOP leader, the worse it is for the GOP and the better for Democrats.

Interesting mystery story and strategic case study, imho.
