CU Regents Vote To Appeal Gun Ruling

The University of Colorado Board of Regents voted this morning to appeal the court decision that allows concealed weapons on campus. The vote was 5-4, along party lines except for Tillie Bishop, a Republican who voted with Democrats to appeal.
CU president Bruce Benson ignored the numerous statistics presented by Regent Jim Geddes and instead trotted out the tired formula response. You know, the one that says “I got my first gun when I was five, but…” and then insert the latest feel-good reason why the target group should not be able to exercise their Second Amendment rights anyway.
The reason for the decision to appeal: the court decision interfered with the Regents’ ability to manage “health and safety issues” on campus. I guess the health and safety of the numerous assault victims on campus is trumped by the bizarre idea that banning guns will somehow make everyone safer.
Incidentally, the Post article infers that there “seems to be student support” for the continued gun ban, because the student government, CUSG (the erstwhile UCSU) voted 9-8 against a resolution that would have encouraged administrators to let the court decision stand. Either the Post has no clue about the political makeup of CU student governments, or they are being intellectually careless. Dismally low voter turnout among CU student elections mixed with ambitious students who view CUSG as a mini-Congressional fiefdom? You get a body that has no real sense of the political will of the students–and doesn’t care. But I digress.
At a Douglas County candidate forum back in March, I met a young couple from CSU, both 21. They were plenty tired of being condescended to by the likes of Bruce Benson, who said “I do not believe we should be having any kid with weapons on campus.” The students were fuming that the administrators had told them to “let the adults decide.” Now, instead of letting all adults decide, the Regents are looking to prevent students by force from exercising their Second Amendment rights. Such sentiment reveals the ivory tower that CU remains. We will see what happens in the courts.

The lawlessness of the CU Board members voting with the majority – voting to violate the clear letter of the law, and voting to violate the legal rights of its students along with the rights of any citizens who might find themselves within the (open to the public) campus area – is betting on a similar lawlessness on the Colorado Supreme Court, which has consistently demonstrated a contempt for the clear letter of the Colorado Constitution and for the rule of law, generally. The case serves as a powerful reminder that our constitutional and statutory rights are under constant threat of being “interpreted” out of existence by the current majority on the Colorado Supreme Court.
