Brady Campaign is Newest Hate Group

In the wake of today’s McDonald vs. Chicago Supreme Court ruling, it appears a wiki editor has revised the Brady Campaign’s Wikipedia entry to reflect the true nature of their anti-gun organization.
Organization type is “non-profit lobbying group / Hate group”? I can’t think of a more honest or appropriate description. It seems that being labeled as a member of a hate group, however, has hurt somebody’s feelings because wiki user Lwsimon objected by stating a citation was needed for the claim that the Brady Campaign is a hate group. Another wiki editor obliged and added this text to the page’s summary:
Following the incorporation of the 2nd Amendment in the Supreme Court decision McDonald v. Chicago, and the resulting acknowledgment of the right to keep and bear arms as a “fundamental right” of US citizens, the Brady Campaign subsequently met the definition of a hate group due to their stated opposition to an established civil right.
Now, I’ve previously joked about the gun control organization being the “Brady Campaign to Prevent Lawful Self Defense”, but this wikipedia edit summarizes the issue and the organization really well. Anybody or any group who opposes allowing law-abiding citizens access to the most efficient tools to protect themselves also opposes the most basic civil right: self defense.
*UPDATE* It appears that the Wikipedia entry for Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign, has also been appropriately updated following yesterday’s ruling:
In 2001, after stepping aside from as mayor, Helmke co-wrote a book Son of a Son of a Politician [1], discussing not only his experiences with politics but also that of his father and grandfather. In May 2006 Helmke was named President of the hate group, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

Now, that’s just perfectly appropriate. List ‘em with the other hate groups, it’s where they belong.
Too bad the cowards at wikipedia scrubbed all these changes.

There is no set definition for a hate group, what is and is not a hate group in the United States are the ADL and the SPLC generally decide what is or is not one. Generally to be a hate group you need to commit hate crimes and I can’t think of any that the Brady Bunch has committed.
You can edit the article all you want, you are still wrong. The Brady Campaign has not been designated by a hate group and opposing an American law sure as shit doesn’t make them one.

Rob, you say there is no set definition for a hate group, yet you say the Brady Campaign isn’t a hate group. Logically, before we begin a meaningful discussion on whether the Brady Bunch are hate groupies, we have to have a definition for what a hate group is, right? So let’s start there. I briefly browsed the websites for both the ADL and SPLC you suggested, but wasn’t able to come across the definition for a hate group. Another alternative, while certainly not an unbias source, would be Wikipeida, which defines a hate group as:
To me, that sounds like a pretty good definition of a hate group. Do you have a better definition you could share with the class? Or should we both accept this definition and continue our discussion?
