Bill Clinton Muddles with CO Primary, Endorses Andrew Romanoff

His wife’s boss has rallied behind Michael Bennet, even going so far as to send his secret agents to bribe Andrew Romanoff out of the race-preemptively - but Bill Clinton isn’t falling in line. Just this afternoon, the Romanoff campaign sent out a letter to supporters, members of the media, and others written by Bill Clinton. It is a strong show of support of the former president for the Democrats’ version of an “anti-establishment” candidate. The letter begins with a background of how the two know each other, and shortly thereafter reads:
As a Senator, Andrew Romanoff will continue to stand up to special interests and fight for working families. We need Andrew’s leadership in Washington — especially now, when so many Americans are losing so much. “It is not enough,” as Andrew put it at the Colorado Democratic Assembly last month, “to put a President of real talent and vision and leadership in the White House if the same qualities are not matched at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.”
Andrew won the state assembly by 21 points. With your help, he’ll win the primary and the general election.
Andrew brings to this race both an extraordinary record of public service and an extraordinary capacity to lead. I believe that those assets, as well as his deep commitment to Colorado, give him the best chance to hold this seat in November.
I support Andrew Romanoff, and I hope you will too.
With such a strong rhetorical endorsement, three questions remain. Will Clinton’s backing of the former House Speaker help Romanoff to secure the nomination in the state when polls indicate he is down by roughly 10 points? (And for that matter, why this late in the game would Clinton get behind a candidate who’s behind in the polls if he felt it would be a losing battle?)
Second, will the ex-president go out onto the campaign trail with Romanoff as a follow-up to the letter? And what does this show about the divide between President Obama and President Clinton, given the circumstances behind the Romanoff bid and the Administration’s well-publicized attempts to preclude a challenge of Michael Bennet? That third question is undoubtedly the most intriguing.
