Leftist political violence in New Orleans

by | 10:36 am, April 13, 2010

[Update: Michelle Malkin is reporting that the story about Palin pins is just rumor…]

Connie Hair is reporting on the beatings of a Bobby Jindal fundraiser and her boyfriend who were apparently attacked because they were wearing Sarah Palin pins.

For all the talk of fear that Tea Partiers will turn violent, this is just the latest in a long string of political violence perpetrated by pro-Obama, pro-Obamacare, and pro-union thugs.

Of course, the media won’t let evidence stop them from their anti-liberty propaganda and paranoia.

But let me be very clear here: The left, and particularly labor unions, have gone from being something like the loyal opposition to being the enemy of the nation, and a violent enemy at that.

Mark Kirk still seems worthless to me

by | 6:30 am, April 13, 2010

I criticized Mark Kirk extremely harshly last June when he voted for the House’s cap-and-trade bill while offering a lame excuse on behalf of a big energy company in his district.  A good friend has since worked to help raise money for Kirk’s U.S. Senate campaign (to fill Roland Burris’ seat) and the Democrats have selected Alexi Giannoulias, a Chicago mafia banker whom I wrote about before anybody outside of Chicago had ever heard of him. That article is, in my opinion, still worth reading.

One might think that this combination of events, along with the importance of getting a Republican majority back in the Senate would lead me to lighten up on Kirk and grudgingly support him.

Hell no!

Kirk is already backing away from his call, just a couple of weeks earlier, to fight hard for repeal of Obamacare.

Quoting from the article linked just above:

“Another day and yet another shifting explanation from Congressman Mark Kirk on his stated position to ‘lead the effort’ to repeal health care reform,” (Giannoulias spokeswoman) Strand said.

What started out as fierce opposition has softened, she said, wondering whether Kirk may have to continue to “blow in the political wind” and end up supporting the reforms.

How pathetic is it for the Republican Party that their nominee is someone who can be so accurately criticized by the campaign of a man almost certainly more eligible for a prison cell than political office (at least political office anywhere other than Chicago)?

I don’t care if Mark Kirk wins or loses.  If, theoretically, Mark Kirk lost by one vote and I learned that I caused that one Republican voter to stay home (I’m not ever going to urge someone to vote for the lowlife Giannoulias), I’d be fine with that.

I feel the same way about Kirk that I did about John McCain in 2008:  If he represents winning then we’ve already lost.

This election must not be about electing Republicans.  It must be about electing principled leaders who respect and understand the Constitution and fundamental principles of the American Founding.  So far, there is no evidence that Mark Kirk satisfies those requirements. No evidence at all.

Connie’s Congress starts today

by | 7:25 am, April 12, 2010

I’m pleased to be able to tell you that my colleague at Human Events, Connie Hair, the hardest-working political reporter on Capitol Hill (and one of the only real conservatives among that group), has her own new section on the front page of the HumanEvents.com web page called “Connie’s Congress”.  In that spce, Connie will frequently update us with what she’s learned over the course of her days in the halls of power, corruption, and lies.

For starters, Connie has a couple of great articles this morning, including:

  • Reps. Costa and Cardoza: Cheapest Dates in Washington? which describes how these two California congressmen switched from “no” to “yes” on Obamacare for a promise of increased water for their districts.  Now, less than a month after Obamacare passed, a judge has ordered the water turned off again.  Connie puts it none-too-subtly: “Does three weeks of water count as being kissed first?”
  • Rep. Ryan Exposes True Health Care Costs as Enacted in which Connie lays out the highlights of a report by Paul Ryan (R-WI) about what Obamacare will really do to this nation’s health care system, along with commentary by Hillsdale College professor Gary Wolfram.

I encourage you to check out Connie’s Congress frequently if you want to keep abreast of what’s happening – what’s being done to you – in Washington, DC.

Hickenlooper: We won’t get fooled again

by | 5:28 am, April 12, 2010

I wrote the following letter to the Denver Post a week ago in response to an article about oil and gas regulations “no longer (being a) hot button issue in (the) governor’s race“:

The Denver Post seems to be buying into John Hickenlooper’s campaign strategy of running as a moderate.  But Coloradoans have been fooled once already by a so-called “moderate, pro-business” Democrat in a race for governor and won’t be fooled again.  This energy-moderate Hick is the same guy who went to Copenhagen to hob-nob with the world’s foremost opponents of real energbilly production, who called self-proclaimed Communist and environmentalist radical Van Jones a “rock star”, and whose every reference to global warming skeptics concludes by saying he wants to “bring them over to our side.” (How eerily cult-like that is…)

John Hickenlooper is only a moderate – on energy, taxes, and every other important issue – in the sense that he talks like a conservative when he thinks conservatives are listening, and talks (and acts) like an ordinary regulate-and-tax-and-spend liberal the rest of the time.  Hickenlooper reminds me of nobody so much as the man whose head is in the oven and feet are in the freezer, so on average his temperature is “moderate”.

Allow me to elaborate given that I don’t have to abide by the Post’s word-count restrictions…

This is the same John Hickenlooper who said that the self-avowed Communist and hater of energy companies, Van Jones, is “a rock star” and is “bigger and better in life than what  you’ve heard.”  I’d hope he’s better Mayor Hickenlooper, because what I’ve heard makes him sound like a toxic mix of economic idiot, leftist radical, and traitor.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyB2SD3JjNI

If that’s the sort of person Hick finds insipring, then he will end up being no more “moderate” in office than Bill Ritter was.  Remember, Ritter ran as a pro-business moderate Democrat.  His first action was then to allow collective bargaining by the state employee work force and his later actions were to do everything in his power to raise taxes while avoiding cutting salaries of government workers whose numbers he increased by hundreds during his own employment freeze.  (Ritter was forced to enact furlough days to cut costs which is much like a salary cut, but those furlough days might not have been necessary – or at least fewer would have been necessary – had Ritter abided by his own hiring freeze.)

Like most people, Hickenlooper probably speaks most freely when he’s around people whom he believes to be fellow travelers. One of those might be unreconstructed-hippie Denver Post columnist Mike Littwin, who had this to say about Hick: “Hickenlooper is, of course, the very green mayor who is running to be a very green governor.”

Don’t forget what “green” means today.  Today’s greens are actually watermelons: Green on the outside and red on the inside.  Hickenlooper is almost certainly not even close to as radical a leftist as Van Jones or Barack Obama, but how much environmentalist leftism is too much?  In my view, any amount is too much, especially with our having a national government so determined to shove enviro-radical policies down our throats. The last thing we need is a sympathetic governor even if he might not go quite as far as Obama and Lisa Jackson’s EPA if left to his own devices.  He certainly won’t work to slow down their destruction of Colorado’s energy industry in particular and the American economy in general.

Hickenritter wants to say he’s against cap-and-trade and not entirely certain about climate change, but his rhetoric is that of a global-warming-kool-aid-drinking liberal.

He attended the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit where he was interviewed, along with the global warming activism leader for Greenpeace, by a leftist TV show.  (See video below thanks to WhoSaidYouSaid.com starting around the 4 minute mark and see transcript HERE)

How’s this for some rational, open-minded rhetoric from the so-called “moderate” would-be governor?

“But a lot of the skeptics, we need to bring them together, sit down, and continue to work through this and bring them over to our side, because I think there’s a reason why Obama—it’s not because he’s a coward or he’s a, you know—17 percent is something he felt that he could sell.”

Or this: “And I think what Obama is trying to do is thread the needle and bring the country together around this issue. And I think my belief of this is nothing—I have no inside knowledge, but I think he’s trying to find some moderate goals that we can all accept, agree as a country, this is a problem, here’s a target, we’re going to move forward, and then accelerate that as he gets a broader consensus.”

Are you kidding me, Mayor?  Where is the slightest shred of evidence that Obama is a consensus-builder, or that he cares whether the country agrees with his radical goals?

Hick then went on to compare Obama to Abraham Lincoln.   Not kidding.

And then he starting going misty-eyed about how the Danish ride bikes to work more than Coloradoans do.  What part of “Nanny State” does Hickenlooper not understand that Americans object to?

But in the end, he came back to the real point of climate alarmists – getting your money, when he said “certainly, dramatically, we need billions of dollars…”

Hickenlooper is, like the current fraud of a governor, a wolf in sheep’s clothing.  Ritter proved that there is no such thing as a trustworthy “moderate” Democrat during his reign of incompetence and growth of government and taxes.  The majority of “Blue Dog” members of the House of Representatives reinforced the point: For Democrats in recent weeks and months, the party normally trumps principle, good government, and the wishes of constituents.  This is not to say that Republicans have a lot to be proud of in recent years, but it seems fairly clear to me that with Scott McInnis you know what you’re getting – even if it’s not massively inspiring.  At least you won’t be swindled – again.

Hickenlooper, just like every other Democrat running as a “moderate” (unless they have a truly moderate voting record on major issues) must not be trusted to govern as anything but a puppet of unions, left-wing activist organizations, and, ultimately Barack Obama.

When you fill out your ballot, just remember the words of the Who:

Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again
Don’t get fooled again
No, no!

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss…

Interview, Part I: Ken Buck believes Jane Norton would vote for tax increases

by | 9:39 pm, April 11, 2010

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck said in an interview in his Greeley office last week that he believes that his leading opponent, Jane Norton, would someday vote for tax increases while he never would.
During the 45-minute interview, Buck answered most of the questions I recently posted for him. I skipped a couple of the questions as we ran out of time. Most of the interview was about how his management of his office over the last five years shows he is a fiscal conservative. That will be covered in Part II of this report.
On whether Norton would ever vote for tax increases, Buck said he believes she would because, “I think that if you look at her position on Referendum C and her position with lobbyists, it indicates that she has made friends with those people and she will pay them back.”
Norton, of course, promises that she won’t raise taxes. She defends her support for Referendum C on the basis that the state of Colorado faced a fiscal crisis. Also, she notes, that—as required under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) section of the state’s constitution—the issue was presented to voters and they approved the tax increase. When she supported Referendum C, she was former Governor Bill Owens’ lieutenant governor.
The next question was: If Bill Owens had made you Lt. Gov. and part of his team and asked you to support Ref. C, would you have backed him up or defied him by opposing C?
Buck answered:”I would choose the team that I was on very carefully. I did not support Referendum C, and I would not be put in the position of supporting Referendum C.”  (Please click on headline to see rest of the interview.)

Backbone Radio, April 11th, 2010: First Principles of Capitalism and Liberty

by | 11:17 am, April 11, 2010

[Updated with guest in 6 PM hour]

First, allow me to wish my dad a very happy 70th birthday today!  (He’s actually celebrating it in Jerusalem…but I’ll buy him a birthday dinner when he comes to visit in a couple of weeks.)

Please join me by listening to (and calling in to) this week’s Backbone Radio program from 5 PM to 8 PM  on 710 AM KNUS in Denver and 1460 AM KZNT in Colorado Springs.

If you’re not in range of the radio waves, you should be able to listen to the show online by clicking HERE.

I’ll be going without a sidekick this week…not that Krista has been anything but great company for the last two shows.  So please give me a call and join the conversation!

Our main focus this week will be on first principles, on adding some intellectual clarity to the swirling chaos of liberal rhetoric and poorly-conceived “conservative” responses, with the intention of arming you with a little more intellectual ammunition for our ongoing battle against the forces of big government, tyranny, and the Nanny State.  In particular, we will discuss capitalism – why it is the best economic system and the only one with a truly moral foundation.

During the first hour, we’ll be joined by Tom Lucero, a Regent of the University of Colorado and a candidate (along with our last show’s guest, Cory Gardner) for the Republican nomination to unseat Betsey “I was against it before I was for it” Markey in Colorado’s Fourth Congressional District.

In addition to talking about his race, Tom and I will talk about just what a Regent does as well as what he sees in the future for CU, particularly during these times of state budget crisis.

In the 6-o’clock hour, you and I will discuss “first principles”.  The importance of a solid philsophical and economic foundation to understanding public policy can’t be overstated.  And you, fellow fighter in the battle for liberty, can’t be the most effective advocate for freedom unless you know why you believe what you believe and know why liberty-oriented policy solutions offer the best outcome in the long term.  I really hope you’ll actively participate in the conversation with me, via phone 303 696 1971, e-mail at ross(at)710knus.com, or instant message from my site at http://rossputin.com.

Also, during the 6-o’clock hour, we’ll be joined by Matt Robbbins of American Majority, a non-partisan, non-profit grassroots organization which focuses on training activists at the local level who will promote the values of limited government and free markets, and who will work to help elect politicians who value those same fundamental American principles.  We’ll hear about the organization as well as about an upcoming activist training day on May 1st in Denver (and dinner with guest speaker Erick Erickson the prior evening, April 30th) which sounds like it will be well worth the time for those of you who want to get involved in bringing liberty back to America.

During the 7 PM hour, we will be joined by Jane Norton, Republican candidate for the US Senate, hoping to unseat Michael Bennet, and running against Ken Buck, Tom Wiens, and others for the GOP nomination.  In order to make sure our short time with Mrs. Norton is used efficiently, I won’t take calls on the air during that time.  However, if you call in and give Joshua a question you want asked, or if you e-mail or IM a question any time during or before the show, I will select among your questions and ask them of Jane Norton.

Again, I encourage listener participation so please call, e-mail, or instant message me, and join in the conversation.

The studio call-in number is 303-696-1971.  Add it to your speed dial!

I have implemented an instant messaging “widget” on my website at Rossputin.com, so if you go to my main blog page, you should see the IM form on the right.   You can shoot me a message during the show and if it’s relevant I’ll respond on air or by return message.

Matt Arnold’s ‘Clear the Bench’ message warmly received by Arapahoe County Republicans

by | 11:10 pm, April 10, 2010

Wireless microphones were worthless in most Republicans’ hands in the Englewood High School gym Saturday.
Some candidates who spoke to the Arapahoe County Republicans’ Assembly figured out how to make the troublesome wireless technology work, several stumbled through presentations using the mikes.
And a few others abandoned the mikes and shouted.
Matt Arnold, a retired Army captain, quickly dropped the mike and shouted his Clear the Bench Colorado spiel. And the crowd heard him and loved it.
Activist Republicans are picking up on Arnold’s campaign against retaining four members who are up for retention votes next November. Whether independents are as angry with the judges remains to be seen. And even if the judges are dumped, Governor Bill Ritter might be able to replace them before leaving office. That seems to be a debatable point.

John Suthers brings down the house at Arapahoe County Republican assembly

by | 10:55 pm, April 10, 2010

When Arapahoe County Republican Party Chairman David Kerber introduced Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, the AG received the biggest and most enthusiastic standing ovation of all the candidates that appeared Saturday.
And the reason was obviouis. Suthers talked about why he’s suing over the Federal government’s attempt via ObamaCare to tell Americans what insurance and other products to buy. That’s unconstitutional, Suthers and the crowd of about 942 delegates agreed.
Now that the Democrats have a candidate, Stan Garnett, who is running against Suthers because he is trying to overturn ObamaCare, Suthers will be able to make ObamaCare one of the top issues in the 2010 campaign. That will help remind voters why they oppose Obama Democrats. Suthers may turn out to be the best vote-getter Colorado Republicans have this year. No question that he’s a winner.
A lot of Republicans wish Suthers was running for governor or the U.S. Senate. He’s a talented communicator who talks nuts and bolts and shoots straight with voters.
