Statement by Independence Institute President Jon Caldara
March 21, 2010
On Sunday night the US House of Representatives passed what we call “Obama-care.” This is one of the darkest moments in American history. The federal government has taken a large step towards control of our healthcare, and with it control of our very bodies. The federal government is taking away our decisions over health insurance and, unprecedented in history, forcing citizens to purchase private products, ultimately under penalty of incarceration.
We at the Independence Institute refuse to watch this atrocity corrode the quality of healthcare in Colorado. For months we have been at work bringing forward an amendment to the Colorado Constitution to preserve as a basic human right our “Right to Health Care Choice.” It is my goal to make Colorado a sanctuary state for quality healthcare.
This citizens’ initiative is very close to the petition stage. Soon we will need as many volunteer petition gatherers as possible. We will also need funding to wage this battle. I ask you, right now, to donate to our fight. I desperately need your talents, your time, and your resources to protect Colorado from this affront coming from DC. We can stop Washington.
Give us your contact info to help gather signatures.
And please donate to this fight here. And please don’t wait.

Of course not! Why would anyone conclude that errors are geographical? Errors are errors and attempts to reinflate the British economy using the same hot air compressors that we use here aren’t going to work any better over there than they have here.

I know that what I am about to say will probably create a wave of anger towards me but I feel I must ask this question!
In the current debate about health care the basis for the Federal Govt intervening is that health care is right not a privilege and so with this amendment is not re-enforcing this assumption? The amendment starts off with “right to health care choice” which I must ask how is this different from health care is a right?
I absolutely agree that the State of Colorado MUST assert its 10th Amendment rights to stop Obama care but I caution against amending the State Constitution because we are motivated to do something, anything.
Amendment 23 is a good example of using the Consitution to fix a problem that did not work nor address the real issue of govt spending.
I look forward to the dialogue!!

Nancy, I didn’t write the amendment, but I think “choice” is the operative word. You have a right to choose what services you want in the voluntary free market, provided there is someone you can agree with on the terms.
But the new health care law takes this right away and forces you to buy insurance OR be subject to taxation/theft if you should refuse (except, possibly, in the case of religious exemptions, as was similarly the case with Amish and Medicare back in the 1960s.)
What’s also interesting about the proposed amendment is that it may allow one to choose to opt out of Medicare taxes, as these, too, are a form of forced health insurance.
On top of that, “choice” is a great word to take back from progressive statists.
