Sometimes Life is Stranger than Fiction

Last week, I started reading George Orwell’s 1984 for the first time. Yes, I know, I’m an uncultured heathen. Deal with it. I’m only about one third of the way in, but Orwell’s already painted a pretty frightening totalitarian society of the future. The below passage struck me as very topical as the Lies of the Man-Made Global Warming Hoax were exposed. In this passage, the main character is in the process of revising the text and data in the permanent record archive of newspapers previously published to reflect what the Party wants the records to say.

See what you think:

But actually, he thought as he re-adjusted the Ministry of Plenty’s figures, it was not even forgery. It was merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another. Most of the material that you were dealing with had no connection with anything in the real world, not even the kind of connection that is contained in a direct lie. Statistics were just as much a fantasy in their original version as in their rectified version. A great deal of the time you were expected to make them up out of your head…

Al Gore, Phil Jones, and Michael Mann anyone? Now, if you have never read 1984, then go out and check the book out from your local library or pick it up at a bookstore. I found my copy at a used bookstore on South Broadway for $3.

1984 is why I never felt the need to read Atlas.
