Gorki Aquila on LIfe as a Musician in Cuba
by Mr. Bob | 1:55 pm, November 12, 2009
This day and age it’s hard to find people under the age of 30 who really know what communism and socialism really is. Not only do communist countries keep information out, they also keep it in so this video is a rare modern look into life in Cuba for a man who wants to be free to play music.
Now that we have an administration who seems to embrace in many ways the leadership of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez calling them”democratic leaders” (I’ve heard some cabinet officials call them that), it seems to further legitimize dictatorial socialist leadership. While Bush may have been sending us towards socialism on a scooter, our current administration has strapped us into a rocket.
Outlawing Low-Priced Books Robs Your Wallet and Freedom
by Ari Armstrong | 10:35 am, November 12, 2009
The following article was originally published online by the Denver Post under the title, “Why we should keep selling low-priced books.”
Outlawing low-priced books robs your wallet and freedom
by Ari Armstrong
Some stores sell popular books to willing customers at low prices, and they must be stopped! At least that’s what the American Booksellers Association (ABA) argued in an October 22 letter to the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice.*
The letter, signed by the ABA Board of Directors, including Cathy Langer of Denver’s Tattered Cover, complains that Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Target sell some “hardcover bestsellers,” including books by John Grisham and Sarah Palin, for only around $9. Moreover — horror of horrors — Amazon sells digital books for only $9.99.
The letter argues that selling low-priced books to people who want to buy them constitutes “illegal predatory pricing that is damaging to the book industry and harmful to consumers.”
You might think that “lower prices will encourage more reading and a greater sharing of ideas in the culture,” but you would be wrong, the ABA claims. Low-priced books will drive out “many independent bookstores,” put book buying “in very few hands,” and eventually allow “mega booksellers to raise prices,” the ABA asserts.
The ABA’s position ultimately is self-destructive. Free speech, and freedom of conscience more broadly, depends on property rights and voluntary association, liberties the ABA undermines.
Writers, publishers, sellers, and buyers have the right to agree to terms they find mutually beneficial. A publisher that wishes to prevent a retailer from selling a book below a certain price may properly set that as a condition of the transaction.
Once a retailer purchases books from a willing publisher without pricing restrictions, the retailer properly has the right to sell the book for any amount it deems proper. If the retailer wants to sell books below cost as a loss leader, give them away, or pay people to take them, that’s between them and their customers.
When politicians control the physical conveyance of ideas, they can control the ideas themselves. As a villain in Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged explains, “If you breathe the word ‘censorship’ now, they’ll all scream bloody murder… But if you leave the spirit alone and make it a simple material issue — not a matter of ideas, but just a matter of paper, ink and printing presses — you accomplish your purpose much more smoothly.”
The ABA helps establish the principle that people with guns — for ultimately brute force is what imposes Department of Justice rulings — can invalidate people’s independent decisions. This same principle opens the door to outright censorship.
The ABA’s position also rests on economic myths. Part of the cost savings of large retailers comes from publishers selling books in large orders. The ABA would force publishers and readers to eat the costs of more tiny orders.
Independent bookstores that cannot compete on price should find other ways to attract willing customers if they wish to stay in business. For example, Tattered Cover hosts many public events featuring authors and other speakers. (I spoke at a media panel hosted by the store on September 24.) Tattered Cover also carries a large selection of books that customers can physically look at and buy instantly.**
The ABA’s suggestion that “mega booksellers” would eventually “raise prices” higher than what independent stores now charge is laughable. Not only will many competing booksellers remain in business despite low-priced books, but attempts to raise prices inevitably attract new competitors.
The ABA absurdly argues that low-priced books will cut off writers’ ability to get published. As a book author, I can attest that writers today have unprecedented opportunities to publish their works. Amazon is particularly friendly to writers and publishers.
Tattered Cover does not carry my book, and if I had to rely on independent bookstores my book never would have been published. Yet I did not seek government action to force Tattered Cover’s decisions. Tattered Cover has the right to stock the books it wants at the prices it wants, and it should respect the rights of others to do likewise.
We should expect better from the ABA and from Tattered Cover, often a champion of free speech in Colorado. Ultimately the business of ideas depends upon the integrity of the unforced mind.
Ari Armstrong is the author of Values of Harry Potter and publisher of FreeColorado.com. He lives in Westminster.
* See some of the resulting media coverage.
** November 13 update: As somebody noted in the comments, Tattered Cover now plans to sell used books as well. The Denver Post has the story. Offhand this strikes me as a good idea. The standard fee for shipping and handling for used books at Amazon is $3.99, sometimes more than the price of the book. Tattered Cover can’t offer as wide a selection of used books, but the customer can physically examine the used book and get it right away with no additional transport costs.

I hope Lou Dobbs doesn’t end up at Fox News
by Rossputin | 9:10 am, November 12, 2009
Now that Lou Dobbs has resigned from CNN, there is speculation that he might end up at Fox News. I hope not.
Mr. Dobbs has consistently demonstrated much more interest in beating a political drum than in explaining and reporting economic issues. While I have no problem with opinion providers, Mr. Dobbs was acting as if he was a reporter. But instead, he was pandering to a bone-headed xenophobic populism with his constant attacks on free trade, immigration (not just illegal), and so-called “outsourcing.”
Anybody with his own long-running TV show about the economy and markets should have a much better understanding of these issues than Dobbs does. He is fundamentally not a capitalist and despite the fact that there is a segment of the “conservative” population which is as anti-immigrant and anti-free trade as Dobbs, his addition to Fox News would massively lower the network’s quality and credibility. Or, to put it another way, anybody who would find Fox News to be better with the addition of Mr. Dobbs is somebody who represents part of America’s problems and not part of the solution.

Sharia Law Condones Statutory Rape of 14 Year-Old Girls

Did they really die for this?
by Rossputin | 4:42 am, November 12, 2009
I’m about halfway though the DVD set of the HBO series “John Adams” which my wife gave me for my birthday a few weeks ago.
As I watched an episode on Sunday after reading the news about the passage of the health care “reform” bill in the House – the legislation with potentially the biggest impact on the lives of Americans of any piece of legislation in this nation’s post-Constitutional history yet passed with the vote of only one Republican – I asked myself “Did our Founders really fight and bleed and die for this?”
Did the signers of the Declaration of Independence pledge their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor so that a nation of venal, handout-seeking, citizens and unions could, like leeches, suck the life blood out of the productive sectors of society, redistributing wealth in the name of “social justice”, all while having an understanding of what this nation represents and of the substance of policy issues so weak that their only defense is a political theory called “rational ignorance”?
Obviously, they didn’t. Madison and Jefferson wouldn’t recognize this country. Even Alexander Hamilton, the original champion of a national debt, would be shaking his head in disgust. Can you imagine what Samuel Adams would say as he looked at a bill which combines radical redistribution of wealth, interference with people’s ability to make their own health care decisions, and the insertion of dozens of government bureaucracies into the most personal and important aspects of our lives?
Of course, our politicians – especially but not exclusively the Democrats – are reprehensible embarrassments to the fundamental principles of this nation. It’s as if they’re not American. They might as well be French, with their embrace of socialism. They might as well be British, with their acceptance of political correctness. They might as well be Russian, with their hunger for control over citizens’ lives.
While in terms of political effectiveness, I recommend that Republicans focus relentlessly on jobs, and maybe not as much as I do on philosophy and history. But for those of you who do care about what this nation means, I encourage you to really think about such things and to try to get others to care as well. It’s an uphill battle, with a soft, non-self-reliant electorate who have come to expect and enjoy the Nanny State. We are undoubtedly living Atlas Shrugged, and the situation will probably have to get worse before it gets better. If that’s what it takes, so be it.
Indian report: No global warming effect on Himalayan glaciers
by Rossputin | 2:38 am, November 12, 2009
In a report that’s already generating controversy, the Indian environment ministry released a report on Tuesday arguing that global warming is having no impact on glaciers in the Himalaya mountains, despite predictions of glacial demise by the UN’s IPCC.
While I’m not going to make too much of one report that has its share of detractors, it’s just the latest salvo in the war against the overall hoax of man-made global warming and the costs of their so-called solutions.
I love this line by an Indian delegate to a recent conference on the topic of worldwide carbon reductions: “If the question is whether India will take on binding emission reduction commitments, the answer is no. It is morally wrong for us to agree to reduce when 40 percent of Indians do not have access to electricity.”

Military not told about Ft. Hood suspect’s e-mails

Billions Spent on Anti-Terrorism and inter-departmental intel sharing and still no information sharing in this case….heads should roll. Policies need to change. The previous administration may be just as much to blame.
This however could be Barack Obama’s epic fail. Remember when Carter failed to rescue the hostages and service members died? Not his fault but still he paid a heavy price. This one happened under Obama’s watch.
A Defense official says the FBI and anti-terrorism teams never shared information about Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s contact with a radical Yemeni imam. President Obama has ordered a review.
Reporting from Washington – Two high-profile anti-terrorism task forces did not inform the Defense Department about contacts between a radical Islamic cleric and the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people in last week’s rampage at Ft. Hood, a senior Defense official said Tuesday.
On the day of a memorial service for those killed at the Texas military base, the revelation compounded questions about whether the government had known enough in advance to stop the gunman.
The FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Forces investigated e-mails that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan sent over the last year to Anwar al Awlaki, an imam in Yemen who espouses a radical Islamist ideology and who has ties to militants. Read the rest at the LA Times
Anita Dunn resigns; another scalp for Glenn Beck
by Rossputin | 11:44 am, November 11, 2009
Following his being a leading cause of the removal of communist radicall and 9/11 “truther” Van Jones, Glenn Beck can celebrate again with the announcement that White House communications director Anita Dunn was resigning.
Dunn, the woman who claimed that Fox News was not a news organization but just an arm of the GOP (but who seems to have no problem with the wildly leftist and pro-Democrat MSNBC), was exposed by Beck as another leftist nutter in the Administration after he played a video of her saying that Mao Zedong is one of her two favorite political philosophers.
Yes, that Mao, the guy who killed more people than ANYBODY IN HISTORY. Mao killed roughly 3 times as many people as Stalin and 5-6 times as many as Hitler.
Of course, Dunn runs with the crowd that thinks Che Guevara, another sadistic murderer, is cool. But let’s get this straight, my “liberal” friends: murder is not cool, even if it’s the murder of people who disagree with you politically.
What is it about the left that causes them to murder people by the millions? Could it be that their policies are so anti-human and unreasonable that they can only be implemented through force? Yes, it could be.
And please don’t try to argue that Hitler was a man of the far right. He was no such thing. Other than his racism, which people today like to ascribe as a “conservative” trait, Hitler was a radical leftist.
When will the broader news media start taking a more critical look at Barack Obama’s advisors and czars? How many confirmed socialists and obvious idiots can one president surround himself with before “journalists” start to do their jobs?
In any case, congratulations to Glenn Beck for ridding the White House of one more cockroach. Unfortunately, cockroaches are plentiful and hard to eliminate and I doubt Dunn’s replacement will be much of an improvement.
Gallup poll: Bad news for Democrats
by Rossputin | 10:59 am, November 11, 2009
In an unusual turn of events, the most recent Gallup poll shows Republicans ahead of Democrats on Gallup’s generic Congressional ballot question, by 48% to 44%.
As we’ve seen in both the Virginia and New Jersey elections, there’s been a huge swing among independent voters, and Gallup captures that trend well, showing independent voters going from a 1% preference for the GOP to a 22% preference in just 4 months:

I would note that the poll data was mostly taken before the House passed the health care “reform” bill which has more public opposition than support.
Gallup notes in their discussion of the poll results that a GOP edge in the generic Congressional ballot question is rare and that the GOP often wins elections even when they’re down in this poll because they have better turnout.
In a sense, these statements are indictments of Gallup’s methodology of polling registered voters rather than Rasmussen’s standard of polling likely voters. Rasmussen has had the GOP ahead in the generic ballot question every week since late June, and their latest result has a large 6% lead for the GOP…again with data taken before most of the public was aware of what the House did with health care.
It is a long time until the next election, but I believe these numbers will now begin to hamper the Democrat leaders’ agenda, despite what they were able to do in the House on health care.
I would also note that political enthusiasm breeds political enthusiasm. People like to back winners and don’t like to spend their time or money backing losers. To the extent that Republican politicians seem like they can win, they will have a much easier time raising the money they need to turn that appearance into reality. On the flip side, to the extent that Democrats appear vulnerable, they will have a somewhat harder time raising money with the caveat that much of their money comes from unions who will buy their politicians in any case. Still, Obama received huge numbers of donations from private citizens, an effect which I think will all but disappear for Democratic congressional candidates in 2010.
For the record, I am betting (not big money, of course) on the GOP taking back control of the House in the 2010 elections, getting better than 2-to-1 odds. (Roughly risking $3 per contract to try to win $7 per contract.)

General Casey: Save diversity, not soldiers
by Rossputin | 4:19 am, November 11, 2009
From the “please tell me he didn’t really say that” files comes General George Casey, the Army Chief of Staff, who said on Meet the Press on Sunday regarding the terrorist massacre of our soldiers at Fort Hood last week “And as horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse.”
No, I’m not kidding. He really said that.
This man should be busted down three or four ranks and given a dishonorable discharge.
Seriously, a guy whose only function in life is to make sure that our soldiers win wars and come home alive is arguing that preserving “diversity” in the Army is more important than the lives of 13 people under his command?!?
What brain-dead, unsustainable politically-correct world does this man live in?
How could a soldier of that rank and experience believe such a thing, and if he doesn’t believe it why did he say it?
Can you imagine the effect on morale on our Army bases when the highest ranking member of the Army says that damage to diversity would be WORSE than the murder of 13 soldiers by an American officer? Sure, there may be two dozen Muslim members of the Army who are pleased with Casey’s intent. But even those people, if they are the deeply patriotic people that Casey seems to believe (and which I don’t doubt in most cases) can’t believe, if they’re good soldiers, that Casey’s statement is anything but idiotic at best and dangerous at worst.
Indeed, if you want to ensure that Muslims in the US military are viewed with maximum suspicion and dislike, let the rest of the military believe that the Muslims are a special protected class because of “diversity” even though statistically speaking they pose a far greater risk, per soldier, than any other religious group.
General Casey: It’s time to start profiling, or to be complicit in murder the next time something like Fort Hood happens.
What makes the diversity of the military so strong (if you’re a person who believes that such things are important, which I most certainly don’t) is that it’s organic. People from all walks of life join because they want to. It’s not forced, based on quotas, etc. Once diversity becomes a policy, the nature of the military changes entirely. And a policy of diversity can only do damage to the military’s mission, which is NOT to serve as one large group hug or tolerance training session. The military, and especially the Army and Marines are there to kill people and break things. It doesn’t matter if the soldier is White, Black, Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, except to the extent that one of those groups seems far more likely to contain traitors within our midst.
I have an alternative suggestion for General Casey. Let’s discourage Muslims from joining the military. Then we can spend less on all the surveillance and investigation that the military should do of active-duty Mulims, but will be afraid to do, especially under a president whose sentiments almost certainly mirror the borderline-treasonous remarks of General Casey.

Health care bill: A Bad Deal for Young Adults

A new Cato briefing paper by economist Aaron Yelowitz. Here’s the summary:

The Fed as Officer Barbrady: “Nothing to see here. Move along.”
by David K. Williams, Jr. | 2:35 pm, November 10, 2009
The Wall Street Journal ran an op-ed yesterday against the “Audit the Fed” bill pending in Congress. Anil Kashyap and Frederic Mishkin contend that “The Fed is Already Transparent.”
What’s more, it is highly doubtful that the GAO has the technical competence to evaluate monetary policy. If it did try to conduct these audits, at best it would merely rehash known information. At worst, the GAO would generate confusion by offering its own analysis.
The Devil’s Dictionary of Healthcare Reform
by Rossputin | 7:14 am, November 10, 2009
One of the strengths of the American left is their mastery of using language. They say things that mean exactly the opposite of what they sound like (such as the “Employee Free Choice Act” which means to strip the right to a private ballot in a decision about unionizing.) And, with the help of a credulous press and often lazy electorate, they get away with it more often than not.
In no area is the understanding of the difference between what the Democrats say and what they mean more important than in health care.
Therefore, for today’s reading, may I suggest my article at HumanEvents.com entitled the “Devil’s Dictionary of Healthcare Reform“. I think it’s a particularly good and fun read.

Tom Tancredo May Run For Governor
by admin | 9:04 pm, November 9, 2009
As Josh Penry prepares to suspend his campaign for Governor, former Congressman Tom Tancredo may be preparing to deny Scott McInnis a clear path to the nomination.
This would not be a move without precedent. Tom Tancredo’s gubernatorial intentions were made clear in the months following the 2008 elections when he told Republican insiders and organizations that he was planning to run for Governor. Those plans fell by the wayside in 2009 when Josh Penry began to consolidate support from conservative activists.
More recently, Tom Tancredo was reported to be on the verge of challenging Jane Norton for the Republican Senate nomination had Norton found herself the lone contender in that race.

An informed commenter at the PPC disagrees, and I also do. Penry made his own choice.
“Didn’t happen. Josh made the first call to McInnis. Essentially, Penry didn’t have the money nor the statewide support to beat McInnis and go on to beat Ritter. He’s a smart guy who recognized that fact. Unlike Marc what’s-his-name (Denver U president) who stayed in the primary race with Bob Beauprez, Penry did what’s best for his party and state.”

Hey everyone,
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve no doubt heard about the close House vote on HR3200, a.k.a. the health care gun to our heads. Aside from just bankrupting us and providing worse health care with ever increasing premiums and taxes, the absolute worst thing about this “reform” is that it creates another underclass that will be dependent on government. After all, if the government did not “give” us health care, who would??
I can guarantee that several decades down the road, our nation will have forgotten that at some point in time, health care was provided by doctors in a relatively free market. That dependency, my friends, is what is so sad about this takeover.
The good news is that the House bill looks to be “dead on arrival” in the Senate. Pundits are predicting a rough road ahead for Obama Care.
However, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be proactive and contact our Senators Udall and Bennet and let them know how we feel about this government takeover.
