And Now They Come For Beck

We clocked off five miles more, and I said, “But suppose there isn’t anything to find?”

And the Boss said, “There is always something.”

And I said, “Maybe not on the Judge.”

And he said, “Man is conceived in sin and born in corruption and he passeth from the stink of the didie to the stench of the shroud. There is always something.”

- ”All The King’s Men”, Robert Penn Warren

Most of us recall earlier this year, when the White House boresighted Limbaugh. The “Big Guy” stared ‘em down, then came right back swingin’. In the end, the Administration lost a fair amount of political capital in the attack. Now it’s Glenn Beck’s turn.

The Daily Kos contains a message from Keith Olbermann, in which he invites the members of the Left to dish him the dirt on Beck. Newsbusters also has a commentary on the gathering storm.

On Beck’s part, this is a move that cannot be unexpected. If nothing else, Beck is a survivor and his excellently honed sense of paranoia has no doubt prepared him for what is to come. It’s Glenn’s turn in the barrel, and though it will be unpleasant, I’m sure he’s spent no small amount of time in preparing.

Beck has lost a great deal in his life. He’s banged off both ends of the scale. However, when you’ve literally hit the skids, you put things into perspective. It becomes more difficult to be intimidated. What is the Left going to do, call him an alcoholic (he is)? He also suffers from ADD (self-admitted). In my opinion, he’s  bi-polar as the dickens (but a highly functional BP).

The point is that Beck has done plenty to publicly address his demons. One of his comments, which I wish he’d expand on is, “alcoholics and drug addicts are going to save this country”. I’d like to hear his explanation on that one!

Beck knows what he is, and was. Getting the dirt on him may mean nothing at all as he’s owned up to to a lot in his life. And, though he’s slightly tortured in his own skin, he seems to know himself better than most. This makes him a formidable opponent, as I don’t think he cares as much about himself as he does for the welfare of the Nation. They’ll have to do more than merely “dig the dirt” on him to take him out.

This is going to be hugely entertaining as it’s played out in the media. The White House isn’t going to be in  the lead on this one (they’re not commenting on Beck’s critiques). The Administration is recruiting their minions to shoulder the attack. No doubt this is due to Obama’s flagging popularity. He cannot afford to lose much more, but he can certainly try to get the public’s eye off of the ball. This is really all the maneuver is about.

It continues to get more interesting, as the chocks are thrown under the Obamites. As a student of political history, it is a good era to be alive.

The fascinating similarity between the extreme right in the US and the Nazi is how they always claim to be the victim, even when they are the worse bullies out there. It’s quite insulting to all the victims of the Nazi to compare a feud between 2 tv show hosts and the worse genocide in history. You should be ashamed of yourself, but I guess that if you’re already a Beck fan, nothing will shame you.

    Oh, please.

First off, Nazism was a product of the left. Period. Own it. I will agree in principle that casual or trivial comparisons to Nazism diminish the sense of evil which should taint everything the Third Reich represents (the Holocaust being the bigger part but by no means all of it). I’ve stated before that I don’t approve of the center-right using Nazi references to criticize the Obama administration, for that very reason. How about you? Were you just as outraged when the left spent the bulk of eight years making casual and trivial equations of President Bush to Hitler, and equating his administration’s every policy (including tax cuts, as I recall) to those of the Nazi regime? When you couldn’t go to an anti-war or anti-globalization/anti-capitalism rally – or any left-sponsored rally, for that matter – without seeing a profusion of signs bearing comparisons between the Nazis and Bush or the US? When the comparison was so widely used and so over the top that even the center-right started jokingly using the term “Bushhitler” as an ironic means to illustrate the insanity of the left?

Second, if you are implying that there is not an organized effort to silence Beck by driving him off the air through a targeted boycott, you haven’t been paying attention. I’m not a fan of Beck – I find his rhetorical hyperbole and thetricality irritating – but as usual, the response to speech you don’t like is more free speech, not shutting down the disliked speaker. Is there an organized national campaign by the center-right to shut down Olbermann? Or Maddow? Or Malloy? Or Schultz? (And no, lousy ratings does not evidence of a silencing campaign make, nor does a church here or Republican group there calling for local advertisers to drop these TV/radio programs count as an organized national campaign.)

    Hyperman,

You have really hurt my feelings (not ashamed though). Before I wrote this reply, I had to go back and read my article which, apparently, you didn’t. There is no mention of Nazis anywhere in the blog. Zip. Zero. Nada.

In fact, the entire article is certified Nazi free. (Henceforth, I will no longer speak of this political party). :-(

I suppose it is my fault that I didn’t make it interesting enough for you to actually read any of it. Too bad. You might have found it interesting. I will do better next time.
