Don’t Get Mad, Get Even – Car Tax Blame belongs to Ritter, Legislature, Mullarkey Court – not County Clerks

Public anger in reaction to the Rice/Ritter car tax – the substantial increases in vehicle registration fees, along with the disproportionately (if not extortionately) high, punitive, and regressive late fees – continues to heat up, apparently nearing the boiling point in several instances (“Anger simmers over auto-registration fees,” in Thursday’s Denver Post). Public reaction is apparently so strong against these fees that counties are spending thousands of taxpayer dollars to hire additional security.
People are right to be angry - but the target of their anger is misplaced. County clerks and employees are the wrong target – they’re not the ones who drafted and passed the legislation (Rep. Joe Rice and the Colorado Legislature). They’re not the ones who signed it into law (Governor Bill Ritter). They’re also not the ones who declared that a fee is not a tax – no matter how it is collected or spent, as long as you call it a fee – letting the Legislature end-run TABOR‘s requirement to ask the people first before raising taxes (the Mullarkey Court).
In Sum: don’t shoot (or even yell at) the county clerks and office workers! It’s not their fault – save your anger for the voting booth next November, and remember who did this to you (Ritter, the Legislative majority, and the Mullarkey Court). Meanwhile: let the governor’s office and your state representatives know how you feel, and refuse to pay the unjustified, regressive, and punitive late fees.
Also, you can sign a petition to roll back this unjustified increase – contact Colorado Tax Reform.
(For more on why the late fees are unjustified, and possibly unconstitutional, view my earlier post).

It’s awfully easy to accuse the BLS of fudging the numbers for political purposes, especially since an improving economy is likely to improve Obama’s chances for a second term. But honesty requires that we look more closely at those numbers.
