How ’bout THIS biblical quote?
by David K. Williams, Jr. | 8:46 am, February 28, 2009
From the Rocky Mountain News:
SEN. SCOTT RENFROE, R-Greeley, on Monday opposed Senate Bill 88, which extends health care benefits to the partners of gay and lesbian state employees.
* What he said during the debate: “Leviticus 18:22 says, ‘You shall not lie with a man as one lies with a female. It is an abomination.’ Leviticus 20:13 says, ‘If there is a man who lies with a male as though to lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act, and they shall surely be put to death. … ‘ We are taking sins and making them to be legally OK, and that is wrong. … And I’m not saying that this is the only sin that’s out there. Obviously, we have sin, we have murder, we have all sorts of sin. We have adultery … and we would never think to make murder legal.”
Social conservatives love to quote Leviticus when it comes to condemning homosexuality.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a social conservative quote Matthew 22:39, where Jesus (Remember him? He doesn’t make an appearance in Leviticus) says, “love thy neighbor as thyself.”
If that part of the Bible were quoted half as often as Leviticus, the world would be a far better place.
***
Renfroe showed his understanding of the Constitution is as good as his understanding of the Bible when he declared:
I’m just voicing my opinions on what I believe and trying to speak what I think is the truth. Our First Amendment allows freedom of speech and I should be allowed to say what I want on any issue.
Yes, Senator, you can say whatever you want. No one suggested otherwise. And others can criticize you for what you said. The First Amendment only applies when the government tries to squelch speech. That did not happen here.
This time, the Republicans MEAN it.
by David K. Williams, Jr. | 8:19 am, February 28, 2009
This is a good article, except for this statement: “House Republicans, fortunately, are 90 days sober, as they are putting up a valiant fight to stop the big-government onslaught and move the GOP back to first principles.”
Quote of the Week – Dirk Benedict
by Mr. Bob | 11:52 pm, February 27, 2009
“Even up in Montana I’ve spent the last 20 years defending the right of my boys to throw a frickin’ snowball, to climb a tree, to jump off a little cliff, to go out in the canoe off my dock without a life jacket,” he says. “All the little boys that refused to give into that were put on Ritalin. The future warriors of America are all on Ritalin in the second grade.”

Ritter to raise taxes on every driver Monday
by Mr. Bob | 5:36 pm, February 27, 2009
DENVER (AP) – Gov. Bill Ritter says he’ll sign a bill on Monday to raise vehicle registration fees in Colorado. The increases will be used to pay for bridge and road repairs. The Senate gave final approval to the bill today with a 20-14 vote.
It phases in the increases over three years, ultimately costing owners of passenger cars and SUVs an extra $41 a year.
Democrats have been rushing to pass it because they say it will create thousands of construction jobs.
This is the Democrat idea of creating jobs…raising taxes on people already working. READ THE REST

**Update: Gateway Pundit has an excellent roundup from around the country, and awesome pics of the 1500 or so who gathered at the St. Louis Arch Tea Party.
Here are the scenes from Denver, where 100-150 people showed up at 10am on a workday and braved chilly wind and flurries–and many more photos from Peoples Press Collective–and Michelle Malkin has photos from DC and around the country.
Video will process and be up shortly (YouTube won’t load the video)–meanwhile, PPC’s DC stringer has video from the DC Tea Party rally, and thankfully another participant at yesterday’s rally captured a snapshot of the sentiments, video from Jenny Hatch.
A raucous crowd gathered on a chilly Friday morning, and had a clear message for President Barack Obama.
The Gadsden Society will be holding a non-partisan, pro-liberty rally on Sunday on the west steps of the state capitol at 2pm.
A frequent reference and theme throughout the rally.
The tea bags added a nice touch to this poster.
Wait, capitalism is still popular with Americans?

Rocky Mountain News To Publish Last Edition On Friday; Need For Citizen Journalists Explodes
by elpresidente | 1:08 pm, February 26, 2009
Denver will be a one paper town starting tomorrow:
Colorado’s oldest newspaper will publish its final edition Friday. The Rocky Mountain News, less than two months away from its 150th anniversary, will be closed after a search for a buyer proved unsuccessful, the E.W. Scripps Co. announced today.
“Today the Rocky Mountain News, long the leading voice in Denver, becomes a victim of changing times in our industry and huge economic challenges,” Rich Boehne, chief executive officer of Scripps, said in a prepared statement. “The Rocky is one of America’s very best examples of what local news organizations need to be in the future. Unfortunately, the partnership’s business model is locked in the past.”
The GOP/conservatives/libertarians need to lock-and-load, as the potential for even more media bias without a competitor in the Rocky Mountain News will allow the Denver Post and other media outlets to proceed without that additional layer of fact-checking and watchdogging.
This is a unique opportunity. The Post, by all accounts, isn’t doing that well either. Citizen journalists will represent a critical resource in combatting the misinformation campaigns from the paid hacks on the left here in Colorado. One less outlet means more competition for exposure and a fair hearing (as close to that as possible given the general left-leaning bias in the media).
Business considerations aside, this is a sad day for Colorado.
RIP Rocky Mountain News.
The Post has more, including the dwindling list of two-paper towns.
Ben DeGrow notes the balance that the Rocky brought to the Post’s left-leaning bias, and Joshua Sharf points out the reality of the loss, given that access will be limited to only those with press credentials, as Colorado loses one more layer of transparency and accountability.
And Michelle Malkin has updates on the national level, with a ban of the Fairness Doctrine passing the Senate, but with more backdoor attacks planned against local media and syndicated shows.

State of the Union? Nothing socialism and the Messiah can’t fix, apparently!
by Rossputin | 1:34 am, February 25, 2009
Let’s start with the good part of President Obama’s State of the Union speech last night, since that’s a much shorter task:
He said his administration has “identified $2 trillion in savings over the next decade.” (A decent start against the $3.25 trillion he just spent in one single piece of legislation, but just wait until he tries to gore the sacred cows of members of Congress.)
He said he supports charter schools. (It was great to see Nancy Pelosi not clap.)
He said he would end wasteful defense spending (see same caveat as above about goring sacred cows…)
And one of the best bits, he said he’d eliminate crop subsidies “to large agribusiness.”
OK, that was easy.
The rest of the speech, though, left me fearing for our nation.
In short, he basically said:
(1) Everything he’s doing now is really the Bush Administration’s fault, and
(2) He’s going to “invest” in three of the major areas that liberal pro-Democrat interest groups have been salivating for for years: Energy (sop to the environmentalists), Health Care (sop to socialist nanny-staters), and Education (sop to one of the country’s most powerful unions.)
Time after time, he talked about “inheriting a deficit”, seemingly forgetting that he essentially doubled it in his first few weeks in office. And he made the laughable (and therefore politically stupid claim) that “we passed a recovery plan free of earmarks”, to which one could hear groans and giggles from the Republican side of the room.
I almost laughed out loud when Obama said that his plan will “save or create 3.5 million jobs” (clearly he’s not netting out the jobs he’ll destroy in the process) and that those will include jobs “constructing wind turbines and solar panels; laying broadband and expanding mass transit.” It was barely a notch better than paying people to dig holes and other people to fill them in.
Obama called for a cap-and-trade bill, despite the fact that the system has been an utter failure in Europe and despite the fact that more and more new data show that “climate change” is not greatly affected by CO2, or by humans for that matter.
While Obama mentioned the importance of parents in education, that’s clearly not where his heart – or your money – is. His nanny-state socialism was on full display when he said “the goal of this administration is to ensure that every child has access to a complete and competitive education – from the day they are born to the day they begin a career.” One of the great boondoggles of recent years is government-sponsored “early childhood education”, but I’ll leave that discussion for another time.
If you were listening with your political Babel Fish in your ear, you could hear Obama tell Congress that he will use his political capital to get socialism even while forcing members of Congress to cut back on their spending wishes…because he can.
Oh, speaking of “Yes, I can”, I should mention that Obama said of himself and his fellow politicians that “in our hands lies the ability to shape our world”, and, if that weren’t messianic enough, he’s going to try to be the guy responsible for “a cure for cancer in our time.” I almost said “Jesus!” when I heard that, but even I, a not-particularly-religious Jew, recognized the unacceptable irony in that expression.
There’s a lot more to say about the speech, but I’m so sickened by what is happening to this country that I can’t bear to think about Obama any more tonight. I’ll leave it to others who get paid to suffer that sort of brain damage. In the meantime, I wonder how we are going to survive the national self-inflicted wound that is Barack Obama.
Byron York – Democrats would kill for Bush’s deficit
by Mr. Bob | 4:13 pm, February 24, 2009
Must read of the day #tcot #stimulus
Pelosi and Reid called Bush’s budgets “dangerous” and “unpatriotic,” but with Obama, they’ve changed their tune
Back in 2006, when Democrats were hoping to win control of the House and Senate, party leaders worked themselves into a righteous outrage over the issue of out-of-control federal spending. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called the Republican budget “irresponsible” and “unpatriotic” because it increased the amount of U.S. debt held by foreign countries. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of going on “an unprecedented and dangerous borrowing spree” and declared GOP leadership “the most fiscally irresponsible in the history of our country … no other president or Congress even comes close.”
…..At some point last week, the sheer velocity of Obama’s spending proposals began to overwhelm even experienced Washington hands. In the span of four days, we saw the signing of the $787 billion stimulus bill, the rollout of a $275 billion housing proposal, discussion of Congress’s remaining appropriations bills (about $400 billion) and word of a vaguely-defined financial stabilization plan that could ultimately cost $2 trillion. When representatives of GM and Chrysler said they might need $21 billion more to survive, it seemed like small beer.
