Model Federal Health Board on UK’s “NICE”?
by Brian Schwartz | 2:00 am, January 13, 2009
Who decides? …
In health care, the question is whether you, together with your doctor, will make your most personal and important health care decisions, or whether the government will make them for you. Government-run national health care systems are all about limiting choices. For example, nearly all national health care system impose global budgets, strictly [...]

Don’t just “do something,” stand there
by Brian T. Schwartz | 11:55 pm, January 12, 2009
From Russ Roberts’ op-ed in the Wall Street Journal*:
Back in March, Henry Paulson, Ben Bernanke and the experts assured us that Bear Stearns had to be propped up. If not, the whole system could come crashing down. It is crashing down anyway. Just as in the 1930s, there is no …
Worlds Apart
by T.L. James | 11:20 pm, January 12, 2009
Compare the children at yesterday’s pro-Israel rally and pro-Hamas counter-demonstration: Screaming and yelling. Note the apparent rage on the face of the girl on the left. This boy looks like he’s about to cry. I would too if my “parents” put a target on me and handed me a blood-stained baby doll to wave around. [...]
Bon Voyage: Kathleen Parker Set Adrift from All Conservative Moorings?
by Ben DeGrow | 6:46 pm, January 12, 2009
I have had to defend my critical assessment of a Kathleen Parker post-election column sloppily aimed with disdain at social conservatives. Within that debate, even I have been inclined to see what she wrote as part of an internal squabble within the larger conservative Republican movement.
But if Parker’s most recent writing is any indication, it [...]
Needed Today: Rossputin’s Explanation of the New Deal’s Ill Economic Effects
by Ben DeGrow | 2:15 pm, January 12, 2009
Some cliches are just that because they pack so much truth, they become a frequent, handy reference. One of my favorites (originally attributed to conservative thinker George Santayana) is: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
I can’t think of anything more relevant to our current national political debate than this [...]
Mile High City Gridlock
by Mr. Bob | 12:43 pm, January 12, 2009
I work in downtown Denver, and take public transportation as a way to save dough..parking adds up. Because I live in the north end of town..there are no trains, only buses and in my neck of the woods the routes do not even belong to RTD, they are leased to lesser companies…
When it snows, you never know what is going to happen but we are a one car family at the moment so I had no choice…I take the Express (RTD uses the term loosely) Bus and normally it makes a 15-20 minute drive about 30 minutes, so not bad.
Today however we were surprised by snow, it was not predicted to be any more than an inch or two, and when I checked it last night, they said it would not hit until this afternoon. We woke to this;
Wife drops me at the bus station to catch the 7:15…no show…no problem it’ll be along soon…HA, at 8:30 I decide to take the cross town bus that stops every other block…at least it’s running.
Moving along pretty well but about 2 miles from work the bus gets stuck behind cars thatcan’t make it up a hill…we sit and sit and sit and my bladder is starting to talk to me…”hey remember me, that cup of coffee, that big glass of water?”
Finally at 10:00 I start walking, stop at the next place I can to pee and make it to work 3 hours from when I first got to the bus station. I hate RTD…I know if you live in an area where there are trains, you got to work..and probably almost on time….we don’t have that luxury in Arvada.
People’s Press Collective Does NOT Support Hamas
by zombiehunter | 12:36 pm, January 12, 2009
We saw this flag out there yesterday and just wanted correct any confusion. Joshua Sharf also made mention of this over on View From a Height and we wanted to clear up any misunderstandings. Oh, and the dude to the right in the photo. The ninja? We don’t support ninjas either. Unless they’re mutant, teenage [...]
Face The State: Bill Ritter Dissed Emails from Ken Gordon for SOS Fan Club
by Ben DeGrow | 8:56 am, January 12, 2009
This morning’s must-read for Colorado political junkies … Face The State digs beneath the public relations stunt that was Gov. Bill Ritter’s public feedback email address to help him determine who should be the next Secretary of State:
The responses were overwhelmingly in support of [former state senator Ken] Gordon, who received 1,815 votes on a [...]
PPC Goes to the Pro-Israel Rally at the State Capitol
by randomridge | 6:03 am, January 12, 2009
Yesterday, PPC’s roving press team headed down to the state Capitol to participate in a rally for Israel. Sadly, anti-Semitism remains the last safe prejudice and is thus the pet hate of some remarkably smug and intolerant people. Take in our photo essay and check out the complete set of shots at my Flickr page. [...]
Universal healthcare and the waistline police
by Brian Schwartz | 2:00 am, January 12, 2009
Imagine a country where the government regularly checks the waistlines of citizens over age 40. Anyone deemed too fat would be required to undergo diet counseling. Those who fail to lose sufficient weight could face further “reeducation” and their communities subject to stiff fines.
Is this some nightmarish dystopia?
No, this is contemporary Japan.

Israel Rally and Palestine Protest
by zombiehunter | 7:04 pm, January 11, 2009
The most significant difference I noticed between the Israel Rally and the Palestine Protest was the use of props. Take a look: This is what the Israel side had to say. And then apparently the Hamas side agreed and hung targets on their children. And then they hid behind them. (I thought they only did [...]
Pro-Israel Rally In Denver
by elpresidente | 6:32 pm, January 11, 2009
Between 500-700 anti- and pro-Israel folks made their way to the State Capitol, and through the use of speakers and signs, made their voices heard. There was little confrontation (thankfully), but the emotion was running high on both sides, and police kept everyone off of Lincoln. There are tons of photos after the break, and [...]
What? Another Pally Rally?
by randomridge | 1:44 am, January 11, 2009
This will make what, three times in just over a week? They’re at it again because there will be a pro-Israel rally from 2-4pm on the Capitol Steps on Sunday, which these folks will be attempting to a) upstage by starting a half-hour earlier, b) intimidate by being in full swing when the Israel supporters arrive, and c) shout down like [...]
If Michael Bennet Alienates Hispanics, What Should GOP Take Away?
by Ben DeGrow | 5:07 pm, January 10, 2009
The former career .230 American League hitter who runs in Denver’s liberal circles shares an interesting observation about Governor Bill Ritter’s newly-appointed Senator:
I’ve now heard the same concern raised about Michael Bennet by three different Denver political insiders. Namely, can he win the support of Hispanics in Denver? I’d say the growing conventional wisdom amongst [...]
Anti-Israel Rally In Denver
by elpresidente | 5:06 pm, January 10, 2009
Estimate–200-300 pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel protestors at a rally in front of the state capitol in Denver. “How many innocent have to die?”–plus bonus fake dead baby. Rallying passing cars to honk. “Free, free Palestine! Down, down Israel!” Shouting from behind kaffiyehs. Even the young got involved. “Takbir! Allahu Akbar!” “Free, free Palestine! Down, down Israel!” Emotions [...]
Introducing Senator Kevin Lundberg
by Ben DeGrow | 3:16 pm, January 10, 2009
It’s official. Colorado’s newest state senator is Kevin Lundberg. A press release from the senate minority office earlier this afternoon confirmed the story:
Larimer County Republican House Representative Kevin Lundberg has been appointed as the newest Larimer County State Senator. Lundberg was appointed after an election by the Senate District 15 vacancy committee.

Christianity and government
by David K. Williams, Jr. | 1:34 pm, January 10, 2009
I grew up attending Southern Baptist Churches. I went to Sunday School and “big church” on Sunday morning. My parents brought me back Sunday night for that service, too. I attended fellowship on Wednesday nights and I was a member of the Christian youth group the Royal Ambassadors.
I love theological discussions.
One of my issues with some Christians is that it seems to me they emphasize the Old Testament fire and brimstone over Jesus’ New Testament teachings of love and forgiveness. I think the Sermon on the Mount summarizes Christianity very well.
“Love thy neighbor as you love yourself?” I see too many Christians not even attempting to live by that very high standard, and that is a shame.
In my opinion, more Christians need to look inward and determine how they can be more Christlike, and not spend so much time trying to legislate away the unchristian behavior of others.
Sure, the government can force you at gun point to kneel, but it can’t change what’s in your heart or make you really pray. The government can’t make anyone BELIEVE.
And that is what we as Christians can and should do, by trying to live as good examples to others.
If more of us spent more time teaching the unsaved, loving the unloved and forgiving sinners, we wouldn’t need to pass laws to tell how people how they should live.
They would do it on their own.
In that regard, trying to use government force to make people “act” Christian is counter-productive. Faith does not work that way.
What works is trying to live like Christ.
Christ never lobbied the legislature or gave money to politicians or ran for office.
He lived his life as an example to the world. He loved his enemies. He forgave his trespassers. (Did I mention how hard it is to live like Christ?)
Being an example is the highest calling any Christian has.

LA Hamas Supporters Scream: “Long Live Hitler- Put Jews In the Ovens” (Video)
by Gateway Pundit | 11:06 am, January 10, 2009
In Los Angeles this week the pro-Hamas protesters were cheering for Hitler and–
“Put the Jews in the oven!”
This protest was held in Los Angeles on January 6, 2009 in front of the Israeli Consulate. One group was protesting for Israel’s right to self defense. The other group was protesting in support of Hamas terrorists and for the destruction of Israel:

This follows the rally in Fort Lauderdale last week where the pro-Hamas protesters were screaming, “Go back to the ovens!”
Made in America
by randomridge | 4:44 am, January 10, 2009
When the pundits of business tell you that low-skill, low-margin goods like clothing can’t be produced in America anymore, and simply must be offshored to sweatshops in third-world hellholes, think of American Apparel: Brief background on why I like them so much: this is a $500 million manufacturer of t-shirts, underwear, and the like. Typically low margin [...]
Congressional Democrats’ Cigarette Tax Hike Could Cost Colorado $24 Million
by Ben DeGrow | 6:21 pm, January 9, 2009
Too many real policy debates these days get clouded behind the rhetoric of “it’s for the children”. Sometimes they are also hidden behind a cloud of smoke.
Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress are making a top priority out of reauthorizing the SCHIP program – you know, ostensibly government-mandated health insurance for kids too rich [...]
The Idiocracy of Pull
by T.L. James | 3:30 pm, January 9, 2009
Do you get the feeling nowadays that you’re witnessing Atlas Shrugged coming to life right before your eyes? You’re not alone. The current economic strategy is right out of “Atlas Shrugged”: The more incompetent you are in business, the more handouts the politicians will bestow on you. That’s the justification for the $2 trillion of [...]
Sheeple Watch #12: Replacing A Messiah With A Pharaoh
by T.L. James | 10:54 am, January 9, 2009
It looks like the Senate seat vacated by the Most Holy One is being handed (by corrupt Democrat Governor Rod Blagojevich) to a kooky egomaniac: Roland Burris has erected a grand mausoleum for himself, carved with the words “TRAIL BLAZER” and a long list of his accomplishments, with a space left for his more recent achievements. That [...]
More GOP Candidates Enter the Arena
by Ben DeGrow | 8:55 am, January 9, 2009
It’s January 2009. ‘Tis the season for candidates to throw their hat into the ring. Face The State breaks the news that conservative Denver election attorney Scott Gessler has filed the paperwork to run as a Republican candidate for Secretary of State in 2010. Keep up with all Colorado’s announced Republican candidates for public office [...]
Socialist Ties of President-Elect Obama Appointee Carol Browner Airbrushed?

Back from his overseas trip, Rossputin makes an interesting observation about an apparent effort to airbrush a major Obama appointee’s official Socialist organization ties. Check it out.
Dem Lawmaker: Pay No Attention to the Salaries of Colorado State Employees
by Ben DeGrow | 8:42 am, January 9, 2009
Jessica Fender from the Denver Post reports on one Democrat state legislator doing the union’s bidding to go upstream against the promising trend toward transparency in state government:
The salaries of individual public employees could be kept secret under a new bill sponsored by Assistant Majority Leader Sen. Lois Tochtrop and prompted by a database of [...]

Obama appointee Browner erases her socialist tracks
by Rossputin | 1:54 am, January 9, 2009
In the few days that the news has been going around that Barack Obama’s energy and climate czar, Carol Browner, is officially a member of a major socialist organization, someone’s been busy erasing the evidence.
If you go to the relevant web page now, Browner’s name is nowhere to be found.
But if you want to see what the page looked like just 3 days ago, with Browner’s name near the top of a long list of socialists, take a look at how the page looked on January 5, 2009. I have saved a cached version here:

Bill Ritter in a “Straightjacket” over Colorado’s Taxpayer Protections
by Ben DeGrow | 6:13 pm, January 8, 2009
Sean Paige at Local Liberty Online made a great catch, picking up on this excerpt from Bill Ritter’s State of the State speech earlier today (H/T Complete Colorado):
“There is also an opportunity here – a chance to address TABOR and the constitutional and statutory straightjacket* that makes modern, sensible and value-based budgeting an impossibility. Last [...]
