In Which the Washington Bureau Chief Drools Over Cars Whilst Pretending to Comment on Tax Policy
by Eileen McGuire-Mahony | 3:24 am, December 30, 2008
Some government monkeys find it easy to make policy recommendations because the sorts of things that concern some of us – like privacy and civil liberties – are non-issues in their world. Indeed, if you consider getting more money and power for the government as the only ends to be served, policy is pretty damn [...]
Hick’s hubris rivals Caroline Kennedy
by RMR | 8:30 am, December 29, 2008
It looks like Caroline Kennedy isn’t the only would-be Senator out there who has a problem with letting the public knowing their positions on the issues. Colorado actually has seven potential senators who don’t feel like talking to the public about their positions.
The Denver Post emailed out brief questionnaires to eight politicians rumored to be on Bill Ritter’s list to fill Ken Salazar’s senate seat. Only one, Rep. Diana DeGette, bothered to answer. These weren’t difficult questions either. They covered basic topics like the bailout plans, Roe v. Wade, and the Iraq War. In other words, things that anyone who has watched the news or read a newspaper in the last decade should be able to answer.
Their lack of response was disappointing to say the least. Anyone remotely involved in politics should be able to answer these questions. Reps. Salazar and Perlmutter can save face a little by pointing to their voting records instead of directly answering (for the record, Perlmutter supported the bailout). Andrew Romanoff offered only a hackneyed, political dodge by saying only he is "confident" in the governor’s decision.
Hickenlooper, who has never held federal office and has no record on the issues he would face, had the most crass and tone-deaf response of all:
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper said he would respond to the questions "if appointed to the Senate."
Hickenlooper has confirmed his interest in the appointment. Republicans might want to root for him if this is the sort of hubris he would execute his 2010 campaign with.
In Which the Safety Stasi Ruin Dinner.

We fade is as I, home for Christmas with the parents, am at a fondue restaurant that is something of a local legend. We have been seated for nearly two hours and the salad course is a distant memory. I am trying to order another drink, only some fiend has made off with the wine [...]
Stossel on deficit spending
by Brian T. Schwartz | 3:33 pm, December 28, 2008
John Stossel writes eloquently on the danger and injustice of deficit spending:
Obama must realize that government has no wealth of its own and that commandeering scarce resources from the private sector only stifles the economy. Deficit spending does this two ways. When the Treasury borrows money, it outbids private borrowers …
Christmas 2008
by infinity3 | 9:01 pm, December 27, 2008
I just had the best Christmas and it wasn’t even with my biological family in my hometown. I was welcomed with open arms by my boyfriend’s family in Santa Barbara.
I introduced them to A Christmas Story, the cult classic that I thought everybody had seen a thousand times. Nary a one of these Californians had seen it, my boyfriend’s mom bought the DVD and we ensconced ourselves in the living room and viewed it together. His parents just hooted with delight at Ralphie’s elementary school escapades. I, of course, had seen it thousands of times, but I got a kick out of watching them see it for the first time. Is that what it’s like to have kids and watch them grow up? Been there-done that-now it’s your turn?
I was introduced to wading in the Pacific Ocean on Christmas Day and watching my boyfriend’s Aunt decorate a penis cake with walnuts. Not kidding folks. My boyfriend peeked his face into the kitchen and was like, “What the….!” Needless to say, this is a departure from my family’s tradition of making cranberry sauce.
Trekking to the Santa Ynez wine country was another super memory from this year. I wine tasted at Firestone, Fess Parker, and Los Olivos. We also went to Blackjack but did not imbibe, because we were getting sloopy- which is sleepy and loopy. What I remember is this cool shop in Los Olivos with a dish in the color of Provence Blue and I still wish I bought it. We also had lunch in Los Olivos and a cyclist came and sat down with us and chatted about his ride.
Piano playing was also a big thing to do. Especially since they have an available, mostly-tuned piano that I can pound on. I brought my music and dazzled his parents with Yanni, Mozart, and Bach. My boyfriend’s dad suggested that my boyfriend should buy me a piano! A PIANO! That was be super. I totally would like one… Hint…
Christmas in California was gorgeous. Let the photo-downloading begin……

Tom Lucero running for Congress in 2010
by zombiehunter | 4:47 pm, December 26, 2008
You may have heard that CU Regent Tom Lucero has declared his candidacy for the congressional seat in the 4th district in 2010. Tom’s realizing early on that when you run on a platform of small government, free markets, and individual rights of the people, you end up taking fire from collectivist, propaganda corporations like [...]
Sheeple Watch #10: Whose Culture of Corruption Is It Now?
by T.L. James | 1:47 pm, December 26, 2008
If this keeps up, the Øbama administration is going to run out of nominees and buses to throw them under when their inconvenient ethical lapses and even more inconvenient ties to The One inevitably surface: It seems that Illinois’ legally challenged Gov. Rod Blagojevich is not the only close Barack Obama associate and Democratic governor [...]
RMN: Liberty is best prescription for health care
by Brian T. Schwartz | 12:04 pm, December 26, 2008
As published in the Rocky Mountain News:
At the recent Colorado Health Care Summit, Barack Obama’s Cabinet pick Tom Daschle said his boss’s “commitment to changing the health-care system remains strong and focused.” But in the wrong direction.
Obama has stated that “capitalism is great for consumers” when they have “many alternatives,” when customers, “not government bureaucrats [...]
Governor Granholm Goes Gulfstream
by T.L. James | 9:42 pm, December 25, 2008
I’m spending the holidays in Colorado’s Democrat-led future, aka Michigan, home of the Big Three auto-making pension companies and an increasingly cash-starved state government. You might have heard of Michigan’s problems and those of its auto-making pension companies in the recent maneuvering in DC over the federal taxpayer bailout of the UAW. You might even [...]
