Hmmm…Will Al Franken Find His Winning Recount Votes in Time?

by | 11:20 pm, November 24, 2008

Powerline has the latest update on the Norm Coleman-Al Franken recount saga. Not exactly the grand Florida melodrama of eight years ago. Nor does the angry, foul-mouthed comedian seem to have much reason to be less angry than usual. As I write this, Coleman’s pre-recount lead of 206 now stands at 210 with 77 percent [...]

Obama – Backs Down on Another Campaign Promise

by | 10:26 am, November 24, 2008

Jeeesh the guy isn’t even in office yet and he’s already breaking his promises….but it is to the liberals so I don’t mind at all. My question is if Tax Increases hurt the economy during a downturn…why is it OK to hurt the economy when we are doing well??…oh yeah, its that spread the wealth around thingy perfected by Communists.

Team Obama reportedly is backing away (for now) from its signature campaign pledge to roll back the Bush tax-cuts on wealthy Americans…

President-elect Barack Obama may consider delaying a campaign promise – to roll back tax cuts on high-income Americans – as part of his economic recovery strategy, two aides said on Sunday.
David Axelrod, the Obama campaign strategist who was chosen to be a senior White House adviser, was asked if the tax cuts could be allowed to expire on schedule after tax year 2010 rather than being rolled back by legislation earlier. “Those considerations will be made,” he said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Bill Daley, an adviser to Obama and commerce secretary under former President Bill Clinton, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the 2010 scenario “looks more likely than not.”
President George W. Bush’s tax cuts are set to expire at the end of 2010. After that they would revert to 2001 levels, when the top individual tax rate was 39.6 percent.

Obama has called for reducing taxes for the middle class, but requiring the wealthiest Americans to pay more than the current top rate of 35 percent.

His aides’ comments suggest Obama may be wary of imposing any additional tax burden at a time of deep crisis, despite the outlook for record budget deficits and mounting national debt. He may also be seeking to bolster Republican support for his recovery measures. READ THE REST

Iraq Vet Mending War Wounds As Teacher’s Aide

FORT CARSON, Colo. — The kindergartners at Patriot Elementary School are busy pasting cutout paper socks in smallest to largest order when the shouts ring out:
“Mr. Carlos. Mr. Carlos.”

The dark-haired man in the Army uniform heads over to one table and crouches, eye level, to 5-year-old Caleb Marlatt who gives him a big smile and holds up his paper.

“Good job. Don’t forget to put your name on it,” the soldier says, moving on to other children who are eager for his attention.

Caleb, watching the other kids mob the soldier, says in a loud whisper, “Mr. Carlos is like my dad. My dad is in Iraq since I was a baby. I want to see him. Mr. Carlos is not my dad. But Mr. Carlos helps you like a dad.”

And the kids, in turn, are helping Mr. Carlos.
Mr. Carlos is Staff Sgt. Carlos Barreto, a 41-year-old career soldier who was brain-injured in a bomb blast In Iraq.

Now he’s an aide at the Fort Carson school, where his Army job is to help the students recite the alphabet, learn to count and recognize written words. READ THE REST

News from the War

by | 9:13 am, November 24, 2008

This Saturday was VI Day (victory in Iraq) and it is about time. The media sure wont’ announce it and President Bush surely won’t make the mistake again of proclaiming victory but it is here.

Nevertheless, the battle still goes on and over the weekend the enemy took more hits.

“Breathe easier over mercury”

by | 8:14 am, November 24, 2008

Denver Post editorial
The Post lauds Colorado’s Air Quality Control Commission’s new rules calling for an 80% reduction in mercury coming from smokestacks by 2014 and 90% by 2019.
So, after the reduction, how much mercury will be allowed to come out of smokestacks?
They have no idea.
According to the Post, no one does. The first step is to determine “accurate measures of mercury emissions.”
In other words, they do not know how much mercury is out there, but they are damn sure it is too much.
The Post affirms its philosophy that no regulation is bad. What will that regulation do? Don’t know. Don’t care. Regulations are good. Corporations are bad.
Mercury may well need to be reduced. These new regulations, however, do not even ask that question. They mandate private action without even asking if it is necessary.
The knee-jerk environmentalist will no doubt argue that all mercury is bad and should be eliminated, no matter how finite its risks may be at infinitesimal levels. Apply that argument to all dangerous substances and see where it leads.
Too many of us wish we could. Too many of us are working toward that goal.

Do Social Cons and Libertarians Have More in Common Politically?

by | 11:08 pm, November 23, 2008

Lately I feel like I’ve been doing a lot of refereeing and discussion about the libertarian-social conservative debate. Along those lines, I believe my readers would gain a lot of insights from this American Thinker essay by libertarian Randall Hoven:

Social conservatism is taking a beating lately. Not only did it lose in the recent [...]

Rep. Joe Knollenberg Supports Bailout of the Auto Industry

by | 7:21 pm, November 23, 2008

More evidence the Republican Party is a sad joke.

Knollenberg, a Republican, says that taxes “are not your money” at about the 3:00 mark. My God, what arrogance.

He is nothing more than a looter, wishing to forcibly take peoples’ earned money, then giving it to his cronies in Michigan. We, the American people, get exactly what we ask for. And he is it.

When you vote Republican because “it’s not as bad as voting for a Democrat,” this is the pathetic result.

Susan Greene: Conservatives Need Not Apply for CSU Chancellor

Susan Greene at the Denver Post scoffs at the idea of retiring U.S. Senator Wayne Allard serving as president of Colorado State University:

The National Education Association has graded him with an “F.” And the American Association of University Women has rated his work with a “zero.”
“Sen. Allard is a kind and humble man. But his [...]

Don’t Offend The One: Sharing $3 Obama Bill Earns Mayor More Negative Attention

by | 6:57 pm, November 22, 2008

The mayor of Greeley has some issues of his own, but sharing a satirical $3 Obama bill with students is apparently too much:

Greeley Mayor Ed Clark, a former police officer who also is the head of security at the University Schools charter school, said today that he has apologized to the family of a student that he showed the bill to.

“I apologized to the family,” Clark said. “I think I’ll leave it where it is.”

Clark did say that he showed the bill to students in the school cafeteria Nov. 14 when one of them asked if had an extra dollar for lunch.

According to the Greeley Tribune, the fake $3 bill is emblazoned with an image of Obama wearing a Middle Eastern headdress Clark describes as a “prince’s hat.” He showed it to a girl, who then showed it to classmates.

He took the bill back from the student and has since discarded it, he said.

“It was political satire,” Clark said Saturday. “I’m not going to talk about it. I’ve got to go. sir.”

Clark’s other actions are certainly more newsworthy than an ill-advised sharing of fake $3 bills.

In fact, it is not clear why this has become a story at all, other than the fact that President-elect Barack Obama is mentioned in relation to some funny money not dissimilar to other fake bills that have been circulating as far back as the Clinton years (I remember $3 Clinton bills in high school).

Will any perceived slight–critism, satire, parody–to the person of our President-elect and soon-to-be inaugurated President now be considered newsworthy, or more importantly, the subject of public scrutiny and even punishment?

PETA Vegetarians Make “Run For The Border”–Update: Video Added

by | 4:22 pm, November 22, 2008

**Update–video from the Denver Post:

Missed this scene earlier today–free “Tofurkeys” distributed in Larimer Square in Downtown Denver:

Holding signs that read, “Don’t Gobble Us–Go Vegetarian,” two PETA members wearing turkey costumes will hand out free soy-based Tofurky roasts (generously donated by Turtle Island Foods) in Denver on Thursday. The action is part of the weary birds’ multicity “Turkey Drive”: To avoid ending up as someone’s Thanksgiving dinner, the two feathered fugitives are heading for the border in the back of a chauffeured red convertible with a sign reading, “Mexico or Bust!” Their goal? To persuade as many people as possible to give birds a break this holiday by choosing a vegetarian meal.

Most of the 300 million turkeys who are killed in the U.S. every year–an astounding 40 million at Thanksgiving alone–endure debeaking and declawing without any pain relief. They are crammed by the tens of thousands into dark, stiflingly hot warehouses, where disease, smothering, and heart attacks are common. A recent PETA investigation at a turkey farm in West Virginia revealed that workers routinely kicked and punched animals and bludgeoned birds with metal pipes, pieces of wood, and other weapons. Workers were also caught intentionally breaking turkeys’ necks and other bones and stomping on their heads.

“This Thanksgiving, we can all give turkeys something to be thankful for–by serving up delicious, healthy, and humane meatless feasts,” says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. “Holidays should be about a celebration of life, not a tortured dead bird in the middle of the table.”

Mmmm–can’t wait for my mother’s dead bird turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes next Thursday. Yet another thing I am grateful for each year.

Each year, the same PETA stunts, with the same results: Americans love to eat turkey, especially on Thanksgiving. Tofurkey just doesn’t cut it.

Sidenote–isn’t the “run for the border” theme insensitive to the illegal immigrants “undocumented workers” that the left so treasures?

On a (somewhat) related note (Thanksgiving, not PETA nonsense)–fellow blogger Ben DeGrow has compiled a thoughtful and extensive list of blessings to be thankful for in the post-election holiday season.

Previous PETA moonbattery in Colorado.
