COLOSSAL IKE STRIKES TEXAS COAST

IKE BARRELS DOWN ON TEXAS...Here’s the live NWS radar view of hurricane Ike as it strikes the Texas coast near Galveston tonight.

As of 11 p.m. CDT, Ike was located about 45 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, with maximum sustained winds at 110 mph; a high-end Category 2 hurricane. The forward movement is toward the west-northwest at around 12 mph. -Weather.com.
Although residents were warned to flee the worst storm in 50 years, 40% of the 60,000 Galveston residents decided to ride out the massive hurricane.

UPDATE: SciGuy at Chron.com wrote about the damage on the ground this morning.
Also, Texas authorities were encouraged that the storm surge topped out at only 13.5 feet — far lower than the catastrophic 20-to-25-foot wall of water forecasters had feared. The winds are still blowing at around 80 mph and the storm was expected to stick around until Saturday evening.
1.3 million are without power.
