I’m hoping the MiSSouri goon squad does not come drag me away in the night.

Here’s the latest Obama logo complete with the Islamic star and crescent:

That’s unfortunate.
Obama was just getting over his Muslim faith gaffe. Now this.

The only good thing coming out of this is the hope that these kids will rebel against their parents and read some economics books when they become teenagers.

Quote of the Day – Rudy Giuliani

by Mr. Bob | 10:47 am, September 30, 2008

From HughHewitt.com

Barack Obama has done what he’s done throughout his entire career, which is vote present, not offer any leadership. We don’t even know what part of the plan he supports or doesn’t support. John McCain delivered sixty Republican votes. When he went to Washington last week, only four Republicans in the House were in favor of this. They ended up with 64. There were enough Republican votes for the Democrats to get this done, but a third of the Democrats abandoned Nancy Pelosi. I have a feeling that if Barack Obama were at the table rolling up his sleeves, taking the same risk that John McCain took, they could have gotten that other twenty or thirty Democratic votes. It might have helped get a few more Republican votes if they saw that kind of commitment on the Democratic side.

HH: Should Obama be out there right now demanding that this pass on Thursday, Mayor?

RG: Of course. He should be working the phones. That’s what a president…this is what our great presidents do. They work the phones. It just doesn’t all happen because you make a speech and say change. It just doesn’t happen because you have a catch phrase or you happen to be able to have sort of a rock star effect on people. Politicians don’t care about rock star effects on people. They care about are you negotiating with me, what you are going to do for me, how are you going to get it done. I passed a lot of legislation as Mayor of New York City. It didn’t happen because I’m a rock star. It happened because I could negotiate with people, and I could work with them to get it done. John McCain can do that. Remember, when he went to Washington, with all the Democrats attacking him, he took the Republicans from four to 64. When Barack Obama went to Washington, it looks like the Democrats disappeared.

Do the Democrats WANT the Economy to fail to score political points?

by Mr. Bob | 9:48 am, September 30, 2008

I would not put it past them, they have accused our troops of mass murder and terrorism in the past just to garner support, why would they not tank the economy so they could swoop in and fix it after the election? Until they prove to me otherwise, that is the way I am leaning.
From Founding Bloggers

There is plenty of evidence that Democrats wanted the bailout vote to fail today.
During this national crisis, the vicious speech by Speaker Pelosi was not designed to bring the parties together or to gain any Republican votes.

Apparently, according to Rove, Democrats were already talking about how they were going to use the vote to attack Republicans before the votes were even counted.

More… Even Obama Campaign co-chair Jesse Jackson Jr. voted against the bill.

It was just another chance for the Speaker to play politics…..read the rest and watch Karl Rove’s evisceration of Pelosi’s inability to lead.

Economist Tells us Why He Urged Congress to Vote Against the Bailout

by Mr. Bob | 8:46 am, September 30, 2008

The current mess would never have occurred in the absence of ill-conceived federal policies. The federal government chartered Fannie Mae in 1938 and Freddie Mac in 1970; these two mortgage lending institutions are at the center of the crisis. The government implicitly promised these institutions that it would make good on their debts, so Fannie and Freddie took on huge amounts of excessive risk.

Worse, beginning in 1977 and even more in the 1990s and the early part of this century, Congress pushed mortgage lenders and Fannie/Freddie to expand subprime lending. The industry was happy to oblige, given the implicit promise of federal backing, and subprime lending soared.

This subprime lending was more than a minor relaxation of existing credit guidelines. This lending was a wholesale abandonment of reasonable lending practices in which borrowers with poor credit characteristics got mortgages they were ill-equipped to handle.

The fact that government bears such a huge responsibility for the current mess means any response should eliminate the conditions that created this situation in the first place, not attempt to fix bad government with more government.

The obvious alternative to a bailout is letting troubled financial institutions declare bankruptcy. Bankruptcy means that shareholders typically get wiped out and the creditors own the company.

Bankruptcy does not mean the company disappears; it is just owned by someone new……

Happy to hear “libertarian” mentioned regarding the bailout defeat

by Rossputin | 8:36 am, September 30, 2008

It does my heart good to read/hear multiple sources describe a surge of libertarian sentiment (even if not knowingly so) from voters, and to hear a fairly important TV business commentator suggest that Libertarian candidate Bob Barr might gain a little traction because of his opposition to the bailout plan.

No, I am not suggesting Barr has any chance of winning. But it would make me happy to see more people listening to his message and learning about libertarian views, regardless of party affiliation.

So, here’s an article relating to this topic:

Read of the day – How A Clinton-Era Rule Rewrite Made Subprime Crisis Inevitable

by Mr. Bob | 3:57 pm, September 29, 2008

One of the most frequently asked questions about the subprime market meltdown and housing crisis is: How did the government get so deeply involved in the housing market?
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, even into the early 1990s, weren’t the juggernauts they’d later be.
While President Carter in 1977 signed the Community Reinvestment Act, which pushed Fannie and Freddie to aggressively lend to minority communities, it was Clinton who supercharged the process. After entering office in 1993, he extensively rewrote Fannie’s and Freddie’s rules.

The House got it right: No Socialization of Failed Businesses

by BlueCarp | 1:16 pm, September 29, 2008

At least for today.

Congratulations to the House for killing the bailout.

This article is telling. It shows some of the wrong-headed ideas behind the bailout in the first place.

To wit:

“Clearly something needs to be done, and the market dropping 400 points in
10 minutes is telling you that,” said Chris Johnson president of Johnson
Research Group.

Yes, Mr. Johnson, something needs to be done. That something is the unemployment of the bankers that made bad loans. While we are at it, the worthless loans can be written off and any salvageable loans can be sold at market value. It’s quite simple.

The value of the failed private businesses – and thus the stock market – has been artificially propped up by government regulation (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were government creations designed to issue sub-prime loans the market would not provide) and bad business judgment. Perhaps if Mr. Johnson’s research group had been a little better at its job, he could have seen this coming and done something before running to Congress asking for taxpayer money to prop up worthless assets.

William Kaye, managing partner of the Great Asia Hedge Fund in Hong Kong, has it right.

He asked

“Why not let them go broke?” he said. “People who do stupid things should get
punished.” He said the Paulson bailout reminds him of the piecemeal way Japan
let a banking crisis drag on throughout the 1990s by periodically rescuing banks
instead of allowing them to go out of business.

Artificially propping up the credit market will only prolong the agony. The market has to adjust. Short term pain is preferable to long term systemic failure.

Thankfully the House understands that.

House rejects bailout plan

by Rossputin | 12:58 pm, September 29, 2008

The House of Representatives defeated the Administration’s proposed bailout/buyout plan by 205-228.

In the few minutes after the vote, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 700 points. It’s down 530 points as a type this at 12:30 PM Mountain Time.

You can bet that the talking heads on TV, Democrats everywhere, and even some Republicans will try to blame House Republicans for putting politics over the well-being of the American public. But the truth is just the opposite.

The House Republicans understand that taxpayers are not as stupid as the rest of our government thinks. Yes, the average person may believe incorrectly that this is a bailout of Wall Street, which it isn’t. But he or she also knows that this is the biggest, most expensive expansion of the government into our economy since the New Deal.

In my view, despite what the market is doing now, the House Republicans are heroes…so far. It’s just a question of what gets done next.

My guess is that the House Republicans extract some substantial changes to the plan, making the outlay of taxpayer money smaller, and focusing more on rule and structural changes, trying to let the market work rather than just adding taxpayer money on top of a massive failure of GOVERNMENT, not of the market.

The Democrats have given us proof as to why this measure should not be passed. They tried to include funding for a corrupt socialist organization in the original bill. They tried to get money and power to unions indirectly that same way.

The Democrats sent 8 negotiators to a meeting with Paulson when he explicitly asked for two members of each party. The Republicans sent one Senator and one Representative.

In one of the most stupid moves of her political career, Nancy Pelosi called Republicans “unpatriotic” for not going to meetings when even a House Democrat said that House Republicans were not consulted enough in the process.

The House Republicans are heroes today. Now they must make sure to defend themselves against the slings and arrows of ignorant or biased (or most likely both) media reports and Democrat press conferences.

They will probably look to enact substantial changes in the bill, changes which will make the bailout smarter, smaller, more effective, and much better for America and Americans in the long run.

Congratulations to the House GOP for standing up against this massive increase in the size, cost, and intrusiveness of government.

Busted… Soldier’s Family Told Obama Not to Wear Son’s Bracelet!

by Gateway Pundit | 8:01 am, September 28, 2008

More Hope and Change…
Or Sick and Twisted?

The Father of Sergeant Ryan David Jopek asked Barack Obama to stop wearing his son’s bracelet.
Obama ignored the father.
NewsBusters reported:

Barack Obama played the “me too” game during the Friday debates on September 26 after Senator John McCain mentioned that he was wearing a bracelet with the name of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, a resident of New Hampshire and a soldier that lost his life in Iraq in 2006. Obama said that he too had a bracelet. After fumbling and straining to remember the name, he revealed that his had the name of Sergeant Ryan David Jopek of Merrill, Wisconsin.

Shockingly, however, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan Jopek, the young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside bomb in 2006, recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family had asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son’s name on it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family.

Economic Knowledge from March 2005

by BlueCarp | 10:48 am, September 27, 2008

Paul Cleveland, of the Ludwig von Mises Institute, wrote this article in March of 2005. A highlight from the article:

. . . many think that the U.S. government would prevent Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae from failing financially if changes in the market worked against their portfolio values. Whether this assumption is correct or not is unclear. However, what is clear is that U.S. taxpayers are on the hook to bail out these institutions at least up to the line of credit and potentially could be called on to pay much more if they failed. In fact, rightly or wrongly, investors generally believe that this is the case given the low risk profile the companies enjoy.

Looks like those investors were right.

To hear economic illiterates say that the current financial “crisis” is a failure of the free market would be laughable if it were not so sad.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are creatures of government interference in the free market. And they have failed, with disastrous results.

BlueCarp recommends everyone read the articles at Mises.org. This is a good place to start.

Schaffer’s energy experience a major plus

by Rossputin | 12:46 am, September 27, 2008

Liberal special interests have been attempting to paint Senate candidate Bob Schaffer as somehow in the pocket of “big oil”. During these times of $4 gasoline, Schaffer should react to “criticism” of having worked in the energy industry in much the same way that Br’er Rabbit reacted to threats of being thrown into the briar patch, but the misrepresentations by Schaffer’s opponents nevertheless cry out for correction.

Congressman Schaffer worked for Colorado-based Aspect Energy for about five years, beginning in 2003. Aspect Energy is hardly “big oil.” Rather it is a small-to-mid-sized independent energy producer, less than one percent of the size of the well-known energy “majors”. Approximately 80% of Aspect’s business is natural gas production, and during Schaffer’s time at the company his primary focus was on the company’s wind energy project. Indeed, according to Schaffer’s former boss, Alex Cranberg, only about ten percent of Schaffer’s work at Aspect was related to oil. If it is somehow reasonable to call Bob Schaffer an “oil executive”, it is more reasonable to call him a “renewable energy executive” despite the constant attention by his opponents and the media to the very narrow fraction of his job that dealt with oil.

As for Schaffer’s compensation during that time, something his opponents are advertising as if he should have been working for free, his salary for each of the five years was $160,000…one thousand dollars lower than Mark Udall’s average annual government salary during that same time.

Without the benefit of their tax returns, estimating they each paid a 25% federal income tax rate after all deductions, Bob Schaffer would have contributed about $200,000 to the federal Treasury in income tax payments on his salary over the five years he worked at Aspect Energy. On the other hand, Mark Udall would have been a $604,000 net drain on taxpayers…not including his non-salary costs such as pension accrual and other benefits he will keep after retirement from Congress, with taxpayers continuing to foot the bill. (Schaffer has no such benefits from Aspect, though he did receive a one-time severance package…which he will pay taxes on.)

Of course, I don’t believe Congressmen should work without compensation any more than Schaffer or anybody else should. However, I do believe that compensation should reflect actual (or at least expected) productivity. And by that standard, Udall owes us all a refund.

During his five years in the energy industry, Bob Schaffer contributed substantially to the federal coffers while working for a local company on projects to increase supply and lower the cost of energy. During that same time, Mark Udall took his salary from the American taxpayers while doing everything in his power to make energy as costly as possible, following the wishes of every liberal and environmentalist group at the expense of the average American who needs to drive to work or heat his home.

While liberal activists think campaign contributions to Bob Schaffer from energy companies are worth criticizing, it is no less interesting to note that Udall has received tens of thousands of dollars from groups such as the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters (Udall’s largest donor in the past year), and the American Wind Energy Association, all of whom have a clear interest in forcing up the price of gasoline, electricity, and all other non-imaginary forms of large-scale energy supply. One wonders whom these people think would supply fuel for their Priuses without the existence of “big oil”, or even “medium-sized gas, oil, and solar” such as Schaffer’s former employer.

Would you rather support Bob Schaffer whose views on energy policy might allow oil companies to profit while they are expanding the supply and lowering the price of the fuel you need to use every day, or Mark Udall whose energy policies have forced you to cut back on dining out, going on vacation, and saving for your retirement while ironically also contributing to the profits of “big oil” he and his liberal friends hate so much?

American Issues Project Responds to Obama’s Missouri Goon Squad

by Gateway Pundit | 6:21 pm, September 26, 2008

Missouri top prosecutors announced this week that they will prosecute critics of Barack Obama.

St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce and St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch are threatening to bring libel charges against those who speak out falsely against Barack Obama.

Michelle Malkin reported earlier that the American Issues Project responded today to Obama’s Missouri goon squads:

September 26, 2008 – Barack Obama is now using local law enforcement officials to carry out his campaign of legal intimidation by assembling a group of high-ranking Missouri police officials and prosecutors – including St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCullough and City of St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce – to identify and target anyone the campaign determines is producing “misleading” political advertisements.

“This is an outrageous and shocking attempt by the Obama campaign to again employ Stalinist, police state tactics against those who dare to disagree with Barack Obama,” said Ed Martin, American Issues Projects president. “I am frankly stunned to see public officials like McCullough and Joyce abusing their official prosecutorial positions to serve as attack dogs for a national political campaign. I am quite certain Missourians elected these individuals to enforce the laws and arrest criminals, not to throw people in jail for daring to practicing free speech.

“The Obama campaign continues to provide a chilling preview of what would happen to political freedom in an Obama administration.”

This new effort is only the most recent attempt by the Obama campaign to crack down on free speech. Obama’s lawyers twice demanded the Department of Justice investigate and prosecute the American Issues Project, its officers, board of directors, and donors. The campaign also threatened stations running American Issues Project’s ad in an unsuccessful attempt to compel them to pull the spot, and ran its own ad in response.
