Go Home Folks, Nothing to See Here

Sitting here watching Barack Obama accept his nomination, I’m simply underwhelmed. I appreciate the absolute ardour his supporters have for him. It’s evident in their tear-stained countenances and their beatific smiles. He makes these people feel something. They aren’t faking it. The people inside Invesco right now look at Obama and see a guaranteed answer to every problem in America.
There’s no doubt they get angry if anyone suggests that Obama is less than perfect. His origins in the notorious Chicago machine, his laundry list of suspect ‘acquaintances’ and association with racism-spouting nationalistic churches are all brushed aside. Career? Accomplishments? Hillary had it right when she said his resume came down to a nice speech. He’s giving another one now. It’s what he does.
Nothing he has ever said is anything more than the stale rehashing of the worst of the 1960s. And he has grown dreadfully repetitious at even that schtick
Right now, he’s spouting platitudes. His words are grand and pretty and utterly empty. Despite his insistence that he is going to tell us exactly what he will do, once again all he’s done is promise the moon without saying a word about how to build a spaceship. Fine, Barack, you’ll “close corporate loopholes” and make sure college is “affordable” for everyone and do wonderful things to reward deserving, hard-working people. But can we get a specific statement?
But I also realize I am looking at the Obama phenomenon as a decided outsider. It’s a bizarre sense, watching millions swept up in a bona fide personality cult and still being unable to see what’s so damn special about the pied piper.
I see Obama as a deeply, deeply flawed man. He’s brilliant, but I also think he is consciously dishonest and that the corruption he chose, over and over, to be part of gave him his start. It may not matter, because the crowd in Denver is eating it up. They cheer at everything.
Obama throws out rhetorical fluff. The masses roar approval. Repeat.
Listen carefully and he begins to sound like he’s given up at even managing to put a patina of rationality on his words: We disagree on abortion but “surely”, says Barack, we can all agree on reducing unwanted pregnancies? Dear boy, “reducing an unwanted pregnancy” is a euphamism for an abortion. If you are referring to birth control, there are voters who are wholly against that, too.
Maybe he really does live in a dream world where Hope and Change will fix it all. His above reference seems to back that up. Do we really have any use for a President who doesn’t grasp that there are fundamental disagreements about first principles – abortion being a prime example – that must be brokered and compromised because there is no way we are ever all going to agree?
He does have a flair for wrapping himself in every mantle and making himself the heir of every enviable accomplishment. He tells the crowd what it wants to hear and reaps the rewards. But the man underneath is a lot of nothing in many ways.
For all the threats and hype and speculation, the 2008 DNC is on its way to fizzling out. The massive protests never happened. The lunatic fringe has already moved on to misbehave and embarrass themselves elsewhere. Hillary bit her tongue and accepted inevitability. Michelle did her utmost to convince us she and her family are everything that, in truth, they aren’t and never will be. Clinton’s supporters never made any credible push to propel her back to the forefront. The only assassination attempt was a farcical plot hatched by a bunch of nuts.
Four carefully scripted days, as fake as Nancy Pelosi’s smile, end in more predictability, Cue the confetti and soaring music. Frame clan Obama with an American flag. Hug, wave, walk, forward. The crowd believes.

Dude… were you watching the same speech? He gave specifics. He gave plans. He gave the Repubs a spankin’.

Rhetoric without substance, emotion without logic, these are not qualities you want in a leader. Obama ain’t right for POTUS. If he gets elected, brace yourselves for a long 4 years.

I’m assuming Sean and Eileen didn’t have the sound turned on. Just because you can’t or don’t want to hear the specifics doesn’t mean they weren’t there. You two are dead-enders, the speech wasn’t meant for you. You think the last 8 years have been grand, as does McCain, and that’s exactly why you are all in the position you are in.
